Default IMS nightmare continues

HI,

For the third time I was forced to drop the tranny to take care of an IMS leak!!!
Last time I installed the LN upgrade and it seems that something went wrong and I still have a leak! (people at LN were great and are sending a replacement flange free of charge...THANKS!)

Now, I have became almost an expert on the disassembly and assembly process, but I found a problem with the IMS not being centered (please see pic).

I did lock the engine on TDC and took the two tensioners out, but it seems that something is still pulling the IMS to the side not allowing it to sit centered.

Any suggestions on what might be the problem here?
I am afraid that if I have to force it to the center during the IMS flange install process I could make it jump a tooth on the chain, and we all not that's NO GOOD!!!

Thanks in advance for the help

IMO either you already jumped timimg on one of the previous attempts or you have not removed the tensioners.....there really is no other explanation...

if the motor is pinned at TDC

The 3rd tensioner located under the A/C compressor maybe pulling it. From the direction of the pull it does look like it is bring pulled by that tensioner.

If you jumped a teeth you should be getting a ck engine light.

The 3rd Tensioner isn't causing that issue. Were you at TDC with the tensioners pulled before or AFTER the IMS flange was pulled?

This is critical.

I remember my IMS was a little off center when i pulled the bearing out and two tensioners. I just carefully moved it back to center to install the LN bearing.

From this angle it almost looks like the support shaft is not out far enough for the flange "O" ring to seal on the smooth shoulder behind the threads.

I pinned the engine on TDC, then I took the tensioners out and only after that I took out the IMS flange

Jake, Just to confirm, why couldn't the 3rd tensioner be the cause?

Thanks

My first guess with everything done right and the bearing goes off center is bad hole the bearing is sitting in.

The 3rd tensioner is at the opposite end of the IMS.. Its force is supported by the plain bearing surface of the front console that supports the IMS.

I've never experienced a 3rd tensioner that caused shaft misalignment, its almost always disassembly thats done at the wrong crank position or came from an engine with compromised timing to begin with.

Jake, was right as expected...engine is out of timing. Unfortunately it seems that I realized the wrong way. I assembled and started the engine and the noise was not what I would call "nice" . I am now dropping the engine and ready to asses damage.

I guees I would need LOTS of help to fix this!!!!

OMG This sucks. Hopefully we're not looking at too much damage..... But I kinda think we are.

Do you know of any good tutorial on engine top-end disassembly? I have the factory manual ,but not the best to follow when you do it for the first time.

I assume I will have to take the heads out to see if there is any damage to the valves.

Alternatively, I thought about doing a leak test first. I thought that if a valve has been bent I would be able to find out with the leak test. What do you think?
