I had a Mk I 996 and got these: http://eagleday.stores.yahoo.net/9962.html
They are oem Porsche cupholders that clip into 3 little holes in the air vents - there is a different one for each side so be sure to order one of each. They worked great and don't hang the drinks over any electronics.

I like them in my Boxster but newer models (not sure of the cutover date) eliminated the holes in the vent housings so not everybody can use these. The down side is that they will only hold a can or water bottle - the smaller the better - and they seem a bit fragile.

How do you get your foot that close to the seat?

Put the Ultimate cup holder on the passenger side. I have two in my car the one on the drivers side holds a 10oz water under my knee, it never gets in the way. If I have a large drink I put it on the passenger's side.

+1 for the ultimate cup holder on the passenger side. If I put a tall travel mug in there, it ends up being very convenient, just within reach to the right of the shift ****.

I just installed by in-dash cup holders. They seem pretty decent. I dont see anything dripping down on the electronics because the bottom of the cupholder is closed. They seem to be an upgraded model of the holders in my Audi. I just wish i could have replaced the silly CD holder instead of my empty tray. Too bad the HVAC didn't fit in that space.

I guess because you are MK1 your cupholders are different than mine.. yours are 2 separate pop-outs right? The ones in ours are not closed on the bottom so they can leak.. but they will not leak onto the electronics (or at least they don't for me) because they are popped away from it. I have leaked condensation from cups or spilled hot coffee, haha, and it drips way back onto the shifter.. ie. my hand.. not the electronics, lol.

And yes, I hate the CD holder too.. i need to get the empty tray.. that thing is a waste of space.. You should get the surround for the HVAC for the bottom.

Hey I owe some pics from my in-dash cupholder install. Notice the closed in bottom to prevent drips...

Just select which you want via the little radio button on the page.

Price seems to have gone up as I recall paying about $20 or so. Granted it was a looooooong time ago.

What's really funny is I just checked eBay and Oklahoma Foreign is selling USED lower shelves for the same price as new.

Gotcha, I overlooked that option on the webpage.
