997 shifter vs B&M (That is in car)

When I first built my Spec996, I put in the B&M. I hated it. Notchy and the geometry sometimes caused the cable connectors to hang up on the shifter cage. I took it out, and put in a 997 shifter cage. I like it much better.

what was the question again
Marc I have not had coffee yet, its coming but DAMN this is killing me - OK so 997 OEM regular non SSK vs 997 box with B&M SSK
I would keep the B&M - the 996 box IMO is the issue and for what ever reason the 997 box just is smoother..
SO Mike ^^^ was your B&M in a 996 box?

Yes it was in a 996 box. FWIW, my 997S had a Porsche SSK in it, and I absolutely loved it. But the B&M in the 996 box was awful. Honestly the stock 997 box & shifter is great for racing. Smooth and quick. Paired with a LWFW it really rocks on downshifts.

see - like I thought...his was in a 996 box - that thing is crap - if yours is in a 997 box you might just leave well enough alone - i thought you had a B&m in a 996 box...
well "thought" is such a strong word........
have you thought about posting on the 997 forum and see if they like the B&M "upgrade" - I read some suff over there and all I can say is "that's a differant crowd"

FWIW, I installed the 997-GT3 shifter in my '04 C4S. Love it. A bit shorter throw than stock 996, very smooth and firm, never notchy/subborn even in coldest (below freezing) temps.
From my own experience and various comments on this and other boards; the 997-GT3 drop-in is the best shift upgrade for the 996 for daily driver use.
Here's a thread on the topic of the various shifter upgrades: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...y-996-c4s.html

LOL @ 997 board....
I was reading those.... had my B&M installed today ($400 at dealer)and Tim over there handing out the instructions to DIY and no one even acknowledging it could be done at home...its a differant mind set for sure
the last thread with title B$M was over 2 years ago and there was a few that compared the 997 SSK to a B&M - the jury seemed to be mixed - so IMO the 997 standard would be a step back....in your case since you have the box
replacing innards I get but are there any parts that stay? My thought if not is maybe the mold was re-worked to get better alignment of the circles (where the bushings fit into)

So, what do I do?
Seriously, I love how smooth my 996 shifts, and on the odd time my wife drives it, she 'accepts' it. I'd love to have a shorter throw etc. but to keep the peace, I'm reluctant to sacrifice the smoothness.

Put in a 997 shifter and see how you like it. If it's not a short enough throw, then you could put in the B&M.

I am invincible! - OH had enough ehhh?
seriously - you wont believe how much better the 997 is over your 996 shifter that is "perfect"

And as a human - "water finds it's easiest path downhill - people are 60% water"....this is exactly what I have been doing!
Ed, I'm not ignoring you.....I just can't compete so I'm staying out of it!
Thanks guys. BTW, the answer appears the 997 box is the way to go from what I'm reading
