what's the best year for the 996? or go for a 997?
In the near future, I would like to get into a 996. From little search and what I have heard/read about - stay away from early (pre 2002 models) - what about Turbo models?
Any of you guys with a 996 wished you waited or upgraded to a 997?
I would really like to get into a 2002-2004 RWD 911, or possibly a Turbo if the price is good.
Love the look of the 997 (this would be non-turbo though), and they are in the same price range for the 2005-2006 as 2001+ Turbo's
This won't happen for at least 1 year, and I may choose to sell the 944 at that moment as well.
Most likely this would be just a weekend, occasional DE car.

The 996 and 997 are in very different price ranges at the moment. I definitely like my 996, but the 997 S would be in my garage, if I could afford it. Hp is very close to GT3 levels, and the interior is SO MUCH better.

I would recommend a 997S/997 or 996 Turbo/GT3 if your budget allows.
Otherwise, I would go with a 911 40th Anniv. as it has the best packaging in the Carrera series.
Happy Hunting.

In the 997 variant: a 997.1 S with X51 might barely break 330 on the dyno - and it's rated at the same 380. The newest 997.2 S with X51 is rated at 408 HP, but you're looking at well over $100,000 for that.
997S [sans X51] may only top 310-ish on the dyno. 997 S-Cars that are chipped, headers, intake etc, might bump 320.
997 base might creep past 300 rwhp if you threw all the mods at it, but otherwise your down in the 270-280 range.
No doubt that the 996 variant GT3 is the better in the HP arena. If you move to 997, well, now you're just in silly HP ranges
But, can't argue about interior, 997>996.

figure, just randomly looking on Ebay and something like Cars.Com - 2001-2003 996 Turbo can be had for around $35k
other 996 would be just a regular N/A, no GT3/GT2
a 997 from 2005-2006 (same sources) - can be had for roughly the same price, no special models here either (no GT2/3/RS etc)
are the differences between earlier 996 and later 996 that much noticible? and what about the turbo, do they have many problems, and if so, with what?
1 year is a long time (if all is well, sometime next summer), yeah, but my opinion isn't going to change on this, my mind is already made up

td,
I'm not sure I believe you about those hp ratings. You better let me try your car, so I can get personal experience.
Good food for thought, and makes me wonder if the 6GT3 should be my next target.

Not really. The 3.6 GT3 is underrated from the factory. Many - if not most - easily push 400 at the crank. Mine dyno'd at 373 at the wheels on a Mustang dyno. Assuming only 10% power train loss, that puts the HP over 410 easy. (Plus the suspension is better, the car is lighter, etc etc).

It depends on a lot, but finances is a big one. I have a friend that bought a brand new 997 this year - and I kind of like the fact that his new car will depreciate more in 1 year and a bit than I paid for my sweet 996 C4S...
I agree with what a lot of people are saying about the GT3 - lot of car for the money, you can't go wrong.
If you want a 997, just wait a year or so. Especially in your part of the world, everyone will want the newest, most expensive, and what they perceive to be the best Porsche they can finance - the 991. Once these come out, it is a natural step in the process that prices will fall for the 997 across the board.
Good luck and take your time, it's wicked fun shopping for a Porsche!
