Default Interesting Read for Porsche Techies

Saw this article recently in another Thread. A very interesting read for those of us who like to delve into some of the technical issues on the 996 engines. Really based on the 3.6/3.8 engines, but also shows some of the differences in the cooling systems between the engines. Give it a read and let me know what you think.

Very interesting, it would be a good data point the see a thermal image of the engine during the test to see the temperature differences between the cylinders under different speeds and loads.

Thanks for sharing Doug! from their web site, it seems the cost is much cheaper to rebuild an m96 engine than in USA.

Baz and the guys at Hartech are top class, I'm off to get the low temp thermostat mod fitted next week. 4 hour drive to get there but I'm looking forward to it...

Thanks Darn and fun read for me and did not get into a political fight with porsche. It seems the 3.4 eng was over engineered (not enough fudge factor) by looking at cooling holes. The 3.8 looks like they used larger same size cooling passages.

Are they just installing a lower temp thermostat?

They're going to replace the coolant, gasket and thermostat and re-bleed the system... I may get the bores looked at whilst I'm there for a good health check.

+1. Very few here want the liability. It is also Porsche's approach here to have the engines replaced and they seem to keep the price of parts very high in comparison to replacement cost of the engine.

Great info, thanks for sharing.
