Most economical way to get a louder exhaust sound.
I'm a little disappointed by the exhaust sound on my stock '99 996. I only got the car a few months ago and I love the car and the performance. However the exhaust sound simply doesn't do the car justice and based on all the forum topics related to this it seems to be a common observation. I live on a Caribbean Island, and am lucky to drive 20 miles a day, so I don't really want to do the full $5000 exhaust replacement job. Instead I was thinking of getting the Fister modified muffles along with an air intake kit. Is this combination likely to give me a nice noise boost and if not what else should I consider? Thanks.

Fister mod will improve sound, but no measurable performance increase.
You could also consider the 996 Sport Mufflers from FVD Brombacher (made in Germany by Dansk - similar to Euro GT3 Sport mufflers - FVD is located in Deerfield Beach, Florida so the shipping could be less expensive for you), or the FabSpeed 996 Sport Mufflers.
Both suppliers offer their mufflers for about $1,000 a pair, they can be DIY installed, and have great sound without angering the neighors on the next island.
Both FVD Brombacher and Fabspeed have excellent websites with lots of detail about their products.
I just recently put the FVD 996 Sport Mufflers on my car and I am super happy with the sound (I'm too old for LOUD and too Porsche Fanatic for stock).

I can't agree with you more. And neither could Porsche AG. The 996 exhaust sound is so muted when they watered down the engines that Porsche AG spent a lot of time working on making them sound like an air cooled car in the 997. Anything has to be better than a stock 996 exhaust.

+1 for FisterD's alone for the best money spent. As modding goes, then intake, headers and Hi-flow cats will give you a more pronounced growl; muffler bypass pipes seem to be a bit over the top, but even less expensive than Fister's.

Does anyone know if this mod works on a 996 turbo ?

FVD's
I just added the FVD Sport exhaust to my C4s and couldn't be more pleased with the sound..... no drone... my wife describes it as a healthy growl, something I am also good at

Diameter of bypass tube
I have a customer who is a custom header manufacturer who can do the bypass tube install for me.
My question is what diameter bypass tube do I need?
