MY first Porsche. 2WD, manual, 76k. I'm having Porsche Dallas do a PPI. I will fly to Dallas and Drive it home to California. Paid $23K, negotiated from $23888k, Yikes, do I have to worry about the IMS on my long drive home. Should I have it shipped for $800. Let's see... air fair+gas+lodging=$500-$600. The big advantage to driving it back is I can personally evaluate. The seller said if I'm not 100% happy they will refund my $500 deposit. Can totally trust the seller, photos, and the Porsche service dept? As you may have guessed, I'm anxious and excited.

I took the same plunge last year, buying an '02 based only on ppi, pictures, and a quick look by a friend of a friend. I would have flown up to buy it too, but the weather was awful. Turned out great. Congratulations and good luck.
And don't let that IMS demon keep you from enjoying the car!

Check the air pressure, fill it with gas and drive it back to california. Pull the key out when filling it up. Check to see if all the key fobs operate the alarm and locking system. If not see if they can fix it for you cheaper than the big buck fix.
You'll love the car. It's rear engine and prone to slip in the back while the front stays planted. Have a safe cruise.

The previous owner(s) enjoyed it for 8 years and 76K miles, so why let the scare tactics of self-promoting entrepreneurs rob you of the same enjoyment? OTOH, on any 8 yr old car and/or with 76K miles, there's a ton of things that could be waiting to fail, that a PPI won't necessarily pick up on. Myself I wouldn't take a new-to-me car of that age/mileage x-country, especially not a brand that not every town has a mechanic or a dealership that can fix it. A 500-mile tow could run more than the cost of shipping the car all the way to your home. Either way the first thing I'd do is purchase the most extensive-coverage warranty on it I could get, and then just enjoy it. The warranty I got on my '03 E-Class last year has already paid me back double what it cost and it still has 2 more years to go.

I would not worry.
If PPI comes back and says the clutch should be replaced, then book an appointment with RUF Dallas and get IMS and clutch replaced at the same time.

Or choose the "A" plan & have PPI done @ Ruf & have IMS bearing installed if you deceide to buy the car. The only extended warranty with immediate benefits. As Nissan claims enjoy the ride!

The majority of your journey will probably be driving through Texas believe it or not. It's a humongous state with long straight stretches of empty tarmac. You're going to love driving through Arizona. It's so beautiful and it feels like you've traveled back in time to the Jurassic era in your Porsche! I laughed when I actually saw a dinosaur theme park on the trip, hours after thinking how ancient the landscape appeared. Dinosaurs really did roam the earth in Arizona.
While you're in Dallas check out Sushi Sake, and Papa's BBQ. The barbecue in Texas is far far superior to anything we have here in Cali. Smoked all day over hickory wood, the dry rub beef ribs aren't slathered in that tomato based barbecue gunk; they just melt in your mouth. And although we have better sushi here in Cali than in Dallas, you have to pay a great deal more for it. For the price Sushi Sake cannot be beat. They fly their fish fresh from Japan and their chef is a 3rd generation sushi chef.
Have fun with your new 996!

drove my 996 from denver to ca 19 hours straight over the summer. Ended up driving through a flash flood in Utah, and what the locals described as a small tornado. I too was worried about the IMS the car had 99k miles on it. I've got 106k miles on it now and love everyday of driving it! I later found a thread on here from the first owner who replaced the IMS at 78k miles so I feel better about that. If the motor blows, it blows I'll find another motor!
