I did it!! I purchased a 2003 911(update 1-11)

Another Texas 996 is exported to a new state.
Three months ago, I bought my 04 996 in Houston. Gave them my deposit, and then had the PPI done before I agreed to buy. Flew down to drive it back to Chicago. If your PPI comes back OK, don't be afraid to drive it back to Cali. First of all, it's cheaper than shipping it. Second of all, you will get to know your car better than you can imagine. Third of all, you will have a great time in the car for 2 days. No complaints there!!!!
This is a high quality 8 year old car with only 76K miles. It's not like it's from the early '70's, has 150K on it, and has been sitting in a garage untouched for 15 years.
Don't panic about the IMS issues. From what I can tell, maybe 5% of the cars are afflicted with the problem. I think that your chances are good that you will never face the issue. Do all the research and reading, and then decide how to deal with it down the road.
To show you how scared the public is on this issue -- The shop that did the PPI for me volunteered to do the IMS replacement "as long as we have the car in our shop." WHAT? This isn't an oil change, boys, and I didn't even own the car yet. I'll bet that they're making a mint on that issue.
Have lots of fun with it, drive it hard, enjoy every (s)mile. And post some damn pictures.

congrats
congrats dennis. I too bought myself a christmas present last week in the form of a 996. You'll love every minute of it. By the way, post some pics before this crew berates you into submission. I had to go out in the dark last week and take a photo or I was risking being banned!

ok i know i haven't been on very much lately, but what the heck is going on with all these crazy IMS questions? can i drive it home or will the IMS go? are you kidding me? that's a "check your state's/purchase state's lemon law" question.
I think i'm about to start selling warranties

Thanks for all the comments, info, and support. The seller already took down the fotos, I don't have any. Anyway It's a 2003 not 2002. Geez, how could I get that wrong! Stupefied by my emotion.

Well....2003s are better {self-serving opinon} ....so, if you're going to confuse years, you're going the right direction.
Probably too late now, but as others have noted, take the time to try to use every button and lever you can find and make sure all keys actually work.
You'll get to the ims in due time....just enjoy the ride for now. At least it's broken in!

My 2002 996 went thru 5 RMS's and it still leaked. It was out off warranty so the factory wouldn't do anything. The dealers I took it to said they have a high percentage of owners with this problem. Needless to say, I don't have the car anymore-if it wan't for the RMS I would still have it but for that caliber of car it was totally unacceptable, so beware and have a thorough PPi by a shop that has the latest go-no go gauge.
