Default Fluid burning?

So I put my mufflers back on today. The peace and quiet is a god send!!! Anyway......After I drove the car, I could smell some sort of fluid burning, could be oil. The rear of the car sat on ramps over night. I am wondering if, due to the angle the car was sitting, some oil may have seeped past the seal. I remember my Explorer had no leak, but when it sat in my driveway, which was a kinda steep uphill, oil would seep past the rear seal and drip, but on level ground, all was good. The other possibility is that I used Prolong spray lubricant when I removed the mufflers and some more today when I removed the muffler brackets from the mufflers for install. I know there is some of the stuff on areas that are getting hot!

If oil did leak past your main seal while the car was on jacks, it wouldn't come anywhere close to you headers.

The burning smell is either the lube your sprayed on the pipes (duh) or the characteristic burning rubber smell these cars exhibit from time to time, where this smell is attributed to the tires heating up as a result of soft compounds, aggressive alignments and rear weight bias.

Good looking car by the way bigboy.

The other fluid that can drip onto your headers is coolant fluid, antifreeze. Ask me how I know. Arecent new coolant tank solved my problem.

I hope its basically nothing. I dont think its the lube, cause this stuff has a sweet smell and I could smell it when my muffler bypass pipes were on, probably on surrounding areas.....but now, maybe directly on the mufflers and brackets ?? I'll see next time I drive it!

Thanks!!

I guess you aren't into taking the exhaust off and putting it back on again to see if it happens again

That aint happnin!! Wasn't alot of fun puttin them babies back on, although it went perfectly! I am also wondering.....I used OEM muffler clamps. They were definitely lightly greased or lubed, as a lot of metal parts come. Could be them just burning off that, not to mention new meteal on a hot exhaust system always smells somewhat till it has adapted.

IMO all new exhaust parts smeel for the first few trips AND if you used any sort of lube/oil to remove bolts that will have to burn off even if you wiped it clean... go drive the car and get the exhaust hot enough to burn the stuff off, a couple good trips.... it will be done

The "sweet" smell is caused by anti-freeze.

No no!! the sweet smell I am refering to is this Prolong spray! Of this I am sure, been using it for years and it has a very distictive smell. No mistake here!!

On the bike the filter change puts oil on the headers. No matter how much it is wiped off it always does a little smoke and smell. I'd think they also put a preservative on the metal so the parts can sit around for years in a warehouse. If the smell isn't there anymore its just stuff burned off probably. Also most raw pipe like the tubes might off been made out of come with oil on them when in the 20 foot lengths and so on. That way the raw pipe can sit in a stock yard and not get much rust on the stuff till sold.
