Default width of new back tires.

When I purchase new tires, and I am going with the Hankooks I beleive, I want the same width tire in the back, I mean the same LOOKING width. I know some tires of the same size can look and sit narrower or wider, even though they are the same size. What measurement should I look at to make sure I get the same look? Would it be the tread width or section width?? And if I need say a 295 instead of a 285 to keep the look the same, would I run into any probs?? I realize I may need a different profile size to keep the tire diameter the same or close.

width is the first number (285 or 295)

second number (30/35/40) is the percentage of sidewall compared to the width

3rd (18) is inside diameter

if you want the same width a 285 will not be as wide as a 295...if you want the same stance calculate the % of sidewall for the same height - good luck, post what you decide and how you like them

I understand how the tire measurements work basically, maybe I didn't explain my self well. Different brand tires look wider and narrower depending on the manufacturer, even though they are exactly the same size. The Pilot sports I have look nice and wide, but I remember someone on this form put the same size tire on the rear in a diff brand, and the tire looked narrower. I dont want this to happen when I purchase my tires. This is also the case on my Hyundai. I put a diff brand tire on than the car comes with and I can see that these tire look narrower, even though they are the same size.

I know what you are saying... My new Perilli Rosso 235/35/19 are Wider than my Toyo T1R 235/35/19, Rosso's rub my Fender Liner now, Toyo's did not... There is really no way of telling this as every brand of tire is a diffrent size even tho the Side Wall Size is the same... You could try getting tech Specs from teh Brand you wish to purchase and Compare...

some have a protective "bead" around the outter edge to keep from curb rash...

how about a tape measure and physicaly measuring them prior to buying them????

(or have a sales rep put one edge against a flat wall and measure the widest point... and then you needd to compare somehow)

The tire rack has specs for all their tires, and when I was looking , I see the "section width" and the" tread width" vary from brand to brand. I will look into these measurements probably when I am looking to buy. This is not a huge deal.......dont get me wrong, but the car looks SO much better the wider the tires get I'm sure you would all agree!!

Just to give you an example, Tire rack shows Pirelli and Bridgestone as OEM tires for my '04, although I have Pilot Sport Ribs, anyway, I looked at the BS's. The 285's have a section width of 11.3" and a tread width of 11.1".....where as the Hankooks in the 285 have a SW of 11.4 and a TW of 10.1" I am thinking that inch less in tread width may show for a narrower looking tire....although the section width may be the tire at it's widest point? I'm not sure.....may have to call tire rack to get some info!!

Probably everybody on here has so many minutes free a month on their cell phones but rarely make a call to get some place like the tire rack to give info. Just call up their place and ask or do a lot of browsing. I'm pretty sure I have seen a spredsheet listing all the specs of tires. Just you have to keep track of the colum you are in. You could always copy and paste the data into an html file then edit out all the tire you could care less about. Been there, done that. Excel works better but I'm not sure if you have that. If you do paste formatting first, then content.

After a LOT of research and a LOT of missinformation form Tire Rack and even Porsche dealers I can tell you 295's fit fine.
Well, at least with the Hankook V12's I put on guys are right each tire is a little different but the 10mm difference is nil and no rubbing or issues at all and adds a little extra protection to the rims.

Thanks for that info about the Hankooks, those are tires I'm gonna do in the near future!!! Knowing the 295's are OK is a great help

The 1st number in a tire size is the "section width" which is the widest part of the tire in mm rounded to the nearest mm ending in "5" (ie. 205, 285 etc.) There are many ways to make a cheaper tire, one way is to narrow the tread width for a given size in order to compete on price in that size.
