Default 3400 mile trip around the corner...

Hello fellows, i am planning on a 3400 mile trip leaving in a couple weeks, starting point is Eugene, OR and finishing in El Paso TX, i will go down to LA but will go farther south to San Isidro and then from there head east towards El Paso.
I will be driving my 911 c2 over the syskiyou pass heading south towards California, i hope i dont have to chain up, from there it should be fairly decent road.
I normally head east once i get to LA, but this time i am going to San Isidro California and then TJ and from there head eastbound, Otay, El Cajon, Yuma, Casa Grande,Tucson on (I-8) then hit (I-10).
I hope I-8 is not a bad route, once i get to Tucson i know it's all flat all the way to El Paso, spend some days down there and then head back...
We'll see how she does on such a long trip, it should be fun.

Sounds like an interesting trip ahead of you. No doubt you'll be bonding well with your Porsche. take some trip pics so we can see what you did along the way.

I hate El Paso, it has the worst road system I've ever seen in the states. Feels like I have a flat all the time and I can feel the ABS grabbing now and then hits due to crappy road surfaces. The interstate access uses some crazy gateway system. At least the people are friendly and is a very safe city compared to all the killing going on in Juarez (4 police killed yesterday). I'm here for a school on Ft Bliss for another 5 months, hopefully my car will survive. Have a ball on your drive.....

On the I-8 right before the state line between CA and AZ the CHP hang out looking for one final speeder.

When you are in Yuma, do the speed limit until you pass the border partol station that is right before the first small mountain range. I've seen alot of people get pulled over there, the highway patrol like to hide in the center divider in all the creasote bushes. After that theres a few highway patrol but they are few and far between. Make sure you give everyone the finger for me when you travel I-10 from Casa Grande to Tucson. For some reason people travelling from Phoenix to Tucson lose about 40IQ points and can't drive.

Have fun!

Not all flat from Tucson to El Paso. The freeway passes through American Cayon which requires a climb. I've been through there and encountered snow, ice conditions, fog, rain, etc.

And high winds out in Texas not uncommon and with high winds there is blowing dust, sometimes enough to affect visibility.

Be aware that you are in a Porsche and as such speed enforcement day or night in TX and dare I say in every state will be strict. I got ticketed on I-40 crossing the TX panhandle in my Turbo going 80mph in a 70mph zone. Every fricking mini-van and dually pickup was running 10mph over but guess which vehicle the Texas trooper crossed over the freeway median in a cloud of dust and sage brush to pull over and give a ticket to... I asked several times for a warning but no can do said the trooper.

I haven't checked the weather yet today but my memory from yesterday -- I've been driving from the mid-west back to CA (left Santa Rosa NM yesterday and spent last night in Tehachapi CA and will home later today) -- there's a rain storm coming through so rain in (northern) CA will translate into possibly snow over the Grapevine and almost certainly snow at the higher elevations every where the storm passes through/over.

(On way east last week ran into snow over 58 at Tehachapi and heavy heavy snow for 20 miles or so on I-40 between Calico Corners and Santa Rosa. Turbo had new Bridgestone tires fitted just before leaving home and it has AWD, PSM and traction control too but it ain't no snowmobile... but I made it through unscathed.)

At all times watch for deer and road debris. I saw no deer this trip but came across a huge truck tire carcass on the center line of I-40 east of Flagstaff. Hit a deer or one of those tire carcasses (aka Detroit Alligator) and it can ruin your trip. Don't ask me how I know.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Bring a code reader, list of codes... and an ingnition switch, maybe a coolant cap.
Flat fix kit so you can get to the next tire place. Small air compressor. What else?

Oh and have a good time.

I will bring my camera with me guys and my cell phone as well and will pictures as i drive miles and miles of road.
So it seems i have to keep an eye on cops as well huh, i always do, but i sure drive around 10mph over speed limit where possible and always have the Escort SR-7 on at all times.
I would have taken my minivan to have a low profile but i just recently sold it, i even had a "soccer mom" magnet on the back just to confuse cops lol.
Have brand new Michelins on the car so i hope they give tractions under different weather conditions, i will bring my chains just in case and hopefully wont have to deal with any fault codes or flat tires :-).

I want to do this some day, drive from New England to the southwest and back.
I wish you luck and happy motoring.
I keep thinking about being stranded in Oaklahoma or somewhere and they don't speak "porsche".
Please keep us posted on your trip.

Concur with fix-a-flat, there are spots of 20 miles between exits.

I have a camera but I hate to stop and take pics. I like to keep moving.

I have a V1 in the car but I was so feeling the after effects of food poisioning that after a stop on the east side of Amarillo TX (at a Holiday Inn Express) I forgot to turn the thing back on and at the time I saw the trooper's car slowing to make the cut across the median I glanced up to see why V1 was silent and noticed then it was no on...

These tires suck in snow. I have experienced snow a few times with Pirelli tires (new) and Michelins (new) and now Bridgestones. My advice is to avoid running into snow. You have chains (cables maybe?) so in a pinch...

Trouble is other vehicles will almost certainly end up running off the road and the freeway or highway can get closed down. However, with chains you can if you can reach it take an exit and cross over and head back the way you came, unless the highway in the other direction closed.

Be sure you test fit the chains *before* you leave and take something to lay on if you have to install chains on the shoulder of the road in inches of snow. But based on what I saw on my last trip and what a co-worker reporting seeing on his trip north on I-5 last week was in the snow people will stop on the freeway to install chains. Even if you pull over on the shoulder there's a big risk that some other car in dodging some butt-head stopped in a lane of traffic will swerve and take you and your car out.

Sincerely,

Macster.
