From that forum:

"Honestly, the GTI will be more fun to drive. I've owned a 2001 911 C4, and while it was totally baller and smooth, and a nice car, it was not as engaging or as nimble as the GTI. You will need a Carrera S/4S or Turbo for something more."

WTF? This is crazy talk.

Always loved GTI's, Owned a Mk 1 and a MkII 16v amoung other VW's ... but 996 and GTI are apples and oranges so that is one dopey comparison.
That said, the new GTI is damn fun!

I agree you can not compare a GTI to a 911, even an older 911. I'd rather have my 996 than any GTI. But the cost of the 996 I believe is your issue. If money is an issue go with the GTI. Operating costs and repairs should be much cheaper.

I would choose a '04 R32 instead of a new GTI for the same money. Just saying...

The GTI is a great commuter/daily driver. It is also great fun on a twisty road. I've owned several of them, going back to an 84 Mk.1.

The 911, on the other hand, is a very serious sports car capable of speeds well in excess of 150 mph and of being competitive on a racetrack right out of the box. Brand new, a 911 costs more than 3 GTIs.

There are really no points of comparison between the two other than the superflous; number of wheels, presence of an internal combustion engine, existence on the Planet Earth, etc.

Now, if the question is whether to buy a new or nearly new GTI or a 996 to use as a primary car, for most people the answer is pretty simple - get the GTI.
