Here's what I would do so you can have the best of both worlds. But a 2006 - 2009 (MKV I believe) and pay it off in a few years. But then you KEEP it after it's paid off and buy a used 996 or perhaps a 997 by then. Then you have two great cars.
I say this from experience as I wish I kept my 2006 GTI w/DSG. I would have it and the 996. But I kept my Wrangler because of winter weather, but I would much rather be tooling around in that GTI than my Wrangler. I'm finally ready to get rid of it after owning since 1996...getting older makes the bumpy ride not as much fun. But it just keeps running and won't stop even with the 2k miles I put on it per year.

Make it easy on yourself and let your girlfriend decide.
Then if she says GTI then dump her and get the 996 and two girlfriends this time.
If she says 996 then get a couple extra girlfriends just like her.
Pretty simple question and answer

I won't get into the argument about which car to get but I can tell you that i recently added a 2010 GTI as my daily driver. Previously my DD was a F250 Diesel which was great to tow with but seriously no fun to drive other than that. When I told my wife I was going to get a GTI she told me I'd look like a nerd driving one...LOL, but in the end she has to admit it's a hoot to drive. At my stage in life i'm not out to impress anyone and if I was motivated in that direction I have a decent stable to pick from. Back to the GTI, this is my 4th VW and they've done their homework on this car. For 27K is got 4 dr, 6 speed manual, leather, Sat radio and boost! Yes I could've bought a used Porsche but I'm pretty set there and I really wanted a 4 door. Great car in my opinion.

quote from vr6growl;
"Take the GTI. You are in college and do not know how/what to fix if things go wrong. The 996 will have things going wrong on it far more often than the GTI will. The Porsche will also cost a lot more to fix when it does break.
When you get a bit older and settle into a job, pick up the 996 as a toy then, when it won't strand you if it breaks..."

Well he's got half of it right. "when you get older". IMO porsche is not for a teenager. Well I guess unless your famous then anything goes.

I have a mkV GTI, an 07, had it since new. It has software giving it about 250hp and 300lbs of torque. It is fun to drive, has great seats and steering wheel.
I also own a 99 996, a 06 Cayman S, an 84 911 track car and a 05 Cayenne TT. The GTI is fun and a great car, but it does not compare to any of the Porsches we currently have or have owned. It all depends on what you are looking for. Want to dust an unsuspecting driver at a red light? A tuned GTI is great for that. Want to take the date out in a nice comfortable upscale interior, the GTI is great for that too. Want to get great gas mileage and keep a smile on your face and dollars in bank account, GTI is great for that.
Want to have a total driving experience, get the 996 or other newer model P-car. Not the best at everything, but for driving enjoyment, they are fantastic. The GTI is good at everything, not really great at any one thing, yet I love mine....
Cheers

Maybe it all depends on what your major is and if the girlfriend is just that and not a planned on wife.
Take some time to figure out if you want the major bucks oil, tires and fluid changes. Then you probably look at around $400 at least any time the car is dropped off at the shop and it isn't just any shop available. Has to be a porsche mechanic or you are really going to be sorry. Better get the alignment done every change of tires and that has to be a special machine that does toe in and out with camber on all 4 wheels.
The car is a great car. Just while you go through some changing times in school and searching jobs with other major investments coming up quick the daily driver burning up tires and taking a chunk out of your budget might not fit your life style needs.
What evers. If you like it get it. Just remember it eats tires and every 5 or 7k miles you ought to be changing the oil and filter to save yourself from regret later. So that's pretty much plan on sending your car on vacations to the porsche dealership or shop instead of you and the girl going some place if your budget isn't fat enough. If you do have enough money its still your car gets to go on vacations with or without you to the shop for check ups.

college student with no money and no tools. He shouldn't be considering a used 911 vs. a new gti. He should buy a used GTI. Save the 911 until after graduation. Sheesh... How about a little fiscal responsibility.
