Either way, get a car with CPO if you can find one - worsth whatever extra you had to pay in the event you need it for anything

Thanks for the great welcome and terrific pictures - love them! The DD is a LX470, but I know my son will want me to pick him up from school in the cab!!!!!

Good luck on your search.
I do grocery shopping with the 996. I don't know how well the boxster will handle a shopping cart full of food.
A new car is going to have mechanical problem taken care of for free I'd think for the protection length.
The boxster might have a smoother ride. But I don't think the 911's have a rough ride anyway.

I hadn't had a Porsche in 20 years - earlier this year i thought I would get a 2005/6 Boxster S.
Test drove a bunch - loved them.
But i decided I should drive a 2002/4 911 Cab before i pulled the trigger.
Took me less than 5 mins behind the wheel of a 2004 911 cab to change my mind.
To me the Boxster was fun, the 911 was Wow.
But everyone has their own preferences - you will enjoy either.

I love my 2003 911 C2 cab.

I'll go against the grain here, get a 09-10 Boxster ( S if the $$ are there). It is newer it has an updated engine and the warranty will last longer.
Ask the same question on the Boxster forum for a different perspective on this.

One thing I'll add for consideration is that early cabs had a plastic rear window and no glove box. I think in 2002 (someone will correct me if I have the wrong year), the cab got a glass rear window and glove box. And an extra 20 horsepower. I really like the Boxster but a 2002-2004 996 cab will be hard to beat.

Better fit and finish? I own both and I'd say fit and finish is virtutally identical, which is what you'd expect whent the interiors are virtually identical (for the same generation). He's talking about the 987 vs 996 and I'd say many think the newer interior is an improvement (I'd say it's a toss up).
To the OP, I'd suggest you get out and drive both. You've listed a pretty wide range of cars and I think a '10 987 is in many ways a large jump over a 2000 996. In fact if you get the S is will pretty much trump a '00 996 in every performance category. Personally if you were going for a cab I'd recommend the Boxster over the 911 (provided you don't need the back seat) as I think it's a more attractive convertable than the 911 (again personal opinion).
Bottom line drive 'em both and choose the car that speaks to you most (or just get one of each).

Mom? <perk>
anyhow I was being silly, the boxster is a great car, its just not a 911 (the satndard) - good to see you getting some info on the cars before you make a choice either way. As far as coupe -vs- cab, its a body stiffness issue, but I pass a gal about once a month on my way to work in a Guards Red 996 Cab and I think it looks pretty hot - still cab is not for me, if I want a ragtop I will buy one designed from the ground up as a ragtop (ie Triumph, Fiat, Miata.....)

i prefer a coupe not only because i think they look better. they are lighter and more rigid. but i know a lot of ppl on here love cabs, so its up to you and what you like better!!!!

I would LOVE to have a GT3 but since I have not won the lottery yet, it is not an option. I like to end up in the back seat when I step on it, so performance is paramount. Looks like the 996 will be it, but I will drive a boxster just to be sure. I hate being shark bait for salesmen - "Dumb blonde with lip gloss=$$$$$$". I have to know EXACTLY what I am talking about when I walk in the door. Are there some years that are better than others for the 996?
