I would like to purchase my first Porsche in a couple of months, so I am starting my research and found this site. I am considering a newer ('05-'10) boxster or an older ('00-'05) 996, which my son tells me MUST be a cab. I would appreciate any point of view about either one. Thanks in advance for all the info.

Before I bought my 996, I considered a new Boxster. I test drove it, and it was awesome. They are very nice, very tight cars. Personally, I prefer the look of a coupe, and I prefer the look of a 911 to a Cayman. I think your best bet is to drive both, and see what you think. The interior of the newer Boxster will be more modern and very nice, but you may prefer the way the 911 drives. It comes down to personal preference. Have fun with the process!

If you haven't driven a Boxster or a 911 cpe or cab, do that first, otherwise you'll get our opinions on which you should drive.Make it your choice and you'll be happiest with your decision. I's also drive a Cayman, but not if you want a convertable.

Boxsters are great cars, but do you want your son to grow up and be a girlie man?
get the 911!

Either way, get a car with CPO if you can find one - worsth whatever extra you had to pay in the event you need it for anything

I had a similar dilemma, newer boxster really drove tighter and was the same price as a 996, but you cannot compare to a 911. More passengers and overall better fit and finish. Ended up with a 99 996 Cab. Definitely made the right decision!

Drive both. If you are leaning towards the Boxster, try to arrange live with it for a few days - particularly if the weather is less than perfect. I find them a bit clautrophobic, particularly in bad weather and traffic. That said, I love driving a Boxster S. It howls and digs in on corners. But in the end I wanted more power and a roof, so I went with a 996.
I would not buy a non-S Boxster.

welcome and good luck on your search. +1000 on searching for a 996-997 as opposed to a Box.
Plenty of Porsches to be had and in all varieties. Mk1, Mk2 C2,C4, Turbo , Cab or coupe, Targas are okay..... As long as the car has previous documented history and maintenance, and PPI is thorough, miles shouldn't be an issue. Is it going to be a daily driver or weekend fun car? either way, it will be a very rewarding experience to own one.
