I was driving tonight and a guy flashed his lights at me. When I got to the liquor store i checked my headlamps with the ignition off. One headlight was on, quite dim, and the other was off. I thought, Oh crap. When I turned on the ignition and left, with my 40 oz. , both headlights came on with full effect. Ignition off, one headlight. Ignition on, headlights work fine. Drove home, they were fine.
Anybody got any information on this subject I would appreciate it. I checked posts and read my 996 Ult. Companion. Got nuthin.
Thanks, Rob
I just want you to know I respect the 40 oz. In college in San Antonio in the late 80's my dinner often consisted of 2/$1 hot dogs at 7-11 (a convenice store) loaded with chili, cheese, pickels, or whatever would give them volume and a $.99 Fourty. We called them Foty's. I miss those $2 dinners. Did you say you had some kind of problem?
With the ignition off, neither of your headlights should work. You should only have the parking lights - including the small bulb inside the headlight housing.

Yep can't leave the headlights on since they go out when the ignition is off even with the key in. It's just some low light bulbs like when you have the parking lights on and pull out on the headlight dial. Pulling out is a lower than headlights bulbs that illume the sides better. If you go to highbeams the side lights cut out and just highbeams are on. Soooooo like they say you have a light out but it isn't a main headlight lamp/bulb.
I remember when you first got your car a little after I got mine. I bet you are still a happy camper. Real nice car you got. If you PCS to Germany I'd check on the costs of altering the car to their standards to make it legal over there. It's a pain and hopefully worth it if you'ld go.
Thanks. I bet it is the parking bulb. I'll figure it out. I am just wondering why that guy flashed his lights at me? He was in a new Vette, maybe he was just saying hi???
BTW, what 40 oz. is 99 cents?? LOL.
This was back in the late 80's as I said and they would have one of those round floor coolers iced by the register. And I can assure you it was not a branded beer but you're talking "Foty" ounces for a buck! Remember that San Antonio had all those breweries (Stroh, Pearl, Kastle, Lone Star) so it had lots of cheap beer. Yes Dennis I went to Trinity. There was also the Pearl right below campus that had dime oysters and quarter beers on occasion. It was not a bad thing to maximize the oysters prior to going out if you know what I'm saying. Not that any of us had a problem but it was a competitive market and we were always looking for any performance advantage. Kind of like with Porsches.

Warning!!!!! On the east coast in the 70's it was traditional to warn oncoming or cars ahead after passing a speed trap or cop or if a cop was approaching from behind to warn other drivers of the danger. Flashing or turning your lights on during the day was the standard procedure. Now of days with blind bat drivers needing a car to have its headlights on during the day who the heck knows why a guys headlights are on. Pretty lame if you ask me.
Short answer it could be a cop hiding ahead. Possibly he is an old east coaster.

That was my first thought but I didn't see any cops. That has saved me more than once from getting a ticket! Very nice thing to do for the other guy.
I'd also check to make sure the headlight assembly is fully seated. If it's starting to work a little bit loose, it can cause a number of weird issues.
