Default Engine light came on today...****!

On my way home this afternoon, stuck in traffic (cause they closed the 400) and all of a sudden the P car started to stutter and next thing you know the engine light started to flash. Pulled into a parking lot and turn the car off. Check the engine…no smoke or smell. Turn the engine on again the light is still on but not flashing anymore. Drove home about 1km away like driving miss daisy, check the engine oil and it seems low with no leaks. Called Dom at Autowerks and he thinks it’s the sparks miss firing. I know it was about time to change them and hope that would be the quick and cheap fix.

When it rain it pores...2 Months ago the waterpump went and I posted a thread saying the P car is built like a tank. 100K on the odo and now I a little discouraged.

Any feedback on what could be the problem. Bringing car in tomorrow.

You either have the greatest diagnostician in the world, or it's a wild *** guess.

Make sure u manually check the oil and don't go by the one that electronically measures it.. Get a code reader and see what the code is...

I would say coil packs or plugs.

+1 for the coils.

Had it happened to me, one of the coils was bad, but replaced both.

If it is the coil do yourself a favor and replace both of them.

Flashing CEL likely due to engine misfires which can be coils, or plugs. Read and post the error codes if you want.

If plugs original then they can be due, past due. I've run plugs over 90K miles and while the tips looked a bit eroded the plugs worked ok. No misfires or any symptoms at all. I've never replaced coil packs on my car (and the OEM coil packs have 235K miles) but different areas of the country are harder on coil packs. I read in the UK Porsche car mags Porsche coil packs go bad rather quickly. Climate I guess.

If you don't want to diagnose teh problem and just throw parts at it plugs and packs probably the best parts to throw. Plugs at least are due and an inspection of the coil packs should confirm if they're due as well. If they're the cause of the misfires they ought to look due for replacement.

Or, spritz some water on the coil packs and see if engine acts up when you start it.

Sincerely,

Macster.
