The early 997 Carrera (2005) has basicly the same IMS design as the later Mk.1 & all Mk.2 996 models (as of 2000) with a small IMS bearing. Those have the highest failure rate (8-10%?). The good thing this has been addressed by various maintenance or retrofit solutions which will leave you with a pretty much bulletproof solution(at least for the IMS failure).
The 997 S models and later Carreras (2006) have a bigger IMS bearing (similar load factor as the dualrow IMS bearings in earliest (1997-2000) 996 cars), however they can still fail (<1%?). There is no maintenance solution available, except removing the bearing seal to allow engine oil to lubricate the bearing.
The 997 Mk.2 (MY2009, available since August 2008) has the new DFI engine which does not have an IMS anymore.
Any 996/997 GT model or Turbo has a different engine with a different IMS bearing design which has no IMS related issues.

Just spoke to Scott up at Mcilvain motors who is buttoning up my IMS replacement right now. Said the bearing looks great at 112,700 miles. I will sleep better knowing that and having the LN bearing in the car now. Will post pics when I get them from him.
Could pick it up tomorrow, but do to travel plans I'll get it Monday.

Particulate in Oil Filter - IMS issue?
Hi - I recently had an oil change done on my 2000 Carrera. 54K miles.
Here's some particulate that came out from the oil filter. Have not run a magnet over the particulate yet.
Is this an IMS or an RMS issue starting to rear its head?
regards,

These particles look like they are hard plastic? From what I've read it could be from the chain tensioner? Not sure if you should be alarm by this.

Oil Filter Particles, 2000 Carrera - concerned !
Hi,
I recently performed an oil change on my 2000 Carrera, 54K miles. Here's some of the particulate from the oil filter.
Have not run a magnet over these to see if this is metal.
Am i looking at IMS / RMS issues?

RMS (Read Main Seal) is a seal, so I don't see how residue of this would end up in your oil. You would notice leaking oil from the engine. The bits look like flakes so could be from the plastic chain tensioner (which is normal); or a sealant for some cover or maybe some other bit grinded by an oil pump. No way to tell from a picture. There are a lot of mechanics going on in the engine, there is much more then IMS that can go wrong. Take it to a good mechanic next time and maybe run an oil analysis (after 3-4k).

I'd have thought it would be around $200 for the pump and not a great deal of labor (given that engine is already out).

I am doing my IMS and I am going with the LN ceramic bearing. I am now trying to source my other parts.
Where do you guys buy your RMS from? What is the part number?
Where do you guys buy your clutch kit from? What is the part number?
Is there any other clutch part that needs to be changed not included in the clutch kit?

I stick with OE parts because I'm just that way.

1999 Carrera here, 45K miles. No issues but I just had the IMS bearing replaced with the LN and also had the RMS done and water pump and AOS. Mechanic says the old IMS looked fine. I will see for myself when I pick it up Monday.
