Default The 996 book is out already right?

I ordered the Porsche 996 The Essential Companion 7 weeks ago and the book still hasn't shipped

The book is out right? Other people have it, don't they?

A guy gets spoiled by some online sites that let you see if an item is in stock. Sounds like the book is being printed again and it will be ready on the 23rd.

Check your Amazon account and then choose "track package". That is the easiest way to let you know if it has been shipped or not. If not, then I'd be a little pissed if it said in stock. I bought mine through Amazon as well but had it within a couple days so not sure why it's taking so long for you.

FYI....Amazon currently says ships 1-4 months. My guess is they are waiting on a printing from their supplier. Just cancel the order and buy from somebody that has it in stock.

Book seems to be out of stock in many web bookstores, I would agree that it is being printed. Its a great book, worth buying.

Found 2 available on ebay; give them a try.

I highly recommend it - the previous owner was nice enough to give it to me.
It is very informative - also has a good history of what was changed when.

There's a pretty good chance it's out of print. Publishers don't run the presses until demand stops; they print a fixed quantity and consign them to bookstores (Amazon doesn't do consignment, one of the ways they changed the business so radically). But out of print doesn't mean sold out, it just means that what's left of the press run is scattered around, languishing on store shelves or in boxes. When this happens, Amazon finds the book for you at another vendor, or from publisher stock, and that's what takes the time.

In my experience, publishers run enough copies to cover the advance more or less, and then wait and see. They're also famous for bailing on a book if it sells too slowly. The book business runs on sales velocity, not sales volume. It's just strange.

Could be OOP, but you don't know unless you check Books In Print. This book is published by a specialty house, not a mass market publisher. They tend to do smaller print runs less frequently. The market for this title is 996 owners, that also want the book (maybe 10% of 996 owners), so it's not a large universe. If I were still forecasting book sales, I doubt I would do more than 1,000 copies.

Edit: I just checked and it is still in print, and will be available again in October 2010.

Here's the publisher: www.veloce.co.uk says its reprinting.

They also sell retail. I got one of Adrian Streather's books from them directly.

Good to know, and quite a difference from mainstream publishing. We actually have to put specific clauses in my rights deals to prevent the publishers from bailing early on a book. They're all about velocity, and if a book hasn't shown potential in the first few weeks, you can wind up going straight to the remainder table...
