Hello, I have just pulled the trigger on my new (used) Porsche 996, it's a 2003 C4S! I am pretty pumped.
I just got the inspection sheet back, and it indicates that the rear brakes are at 6 mm, and the front brakes are at 8 mm or greater. What does this mean, how much life do I have possibly left in these brakes? Vendor said about 50%.
If someone can provide me some insight on this, I would be most grateful. Thanks!

depends on how you brake/drive and where you drive. Some drivers are kinder on their brakes than others. I'm not the easy going type.
8mm is more than half so you should be ok for a bit.
I just changed from my race pads to street and the cost of pads all around for stock is $500.
Rotors need to be changed if they develop a lip on the outer/inner edges, or about 2mm per disc (either side of one rotor) is worn

hahaha on "I'm not the easy going type" - me too ![evilgrin](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/evilgrin.gif)
the brakes have sensors that when the pads get low will illuminate the "BRAKE" light on your dash...that should be quite a while depending on how you drive (or slow it down) - pads can be replaced in minutes as long as the rotors are still ok. prices for pads can be found at Sunset Porsch or Sun Coast Porsche (depending on which side of the country you live, do a search) - OEM is fine unless you get heavy into going to the track, then on a C4S they will suck bad (IMO, from reading on here)
welcome to RL, post some pics of the new ride, state you are in and any details (miles options)

Thanks guys! So it sounds like I've got lots of time on the rears (8mm), but only moderate time on the fronts (6mm)? I'm a newbie at this stuff, and I will probably be kinder on the brakes. Never owned a supercar before!

I suggest some instruction... as always
join PCA and get out to the track. Some time in the seat at auto X or other will be very valuable and keep you from becoming a super statistic
saw your post on the Turbo forum.. check out this link

Thanks guys! I should clarify (I'm sure to much mocking) that this is my "menoporsche" (say it out loud) - I'm a 40 year old guy, it's not like I'll be racing the street punks. I do hope to take it to a track someday, but mostly it'll be my daily driver...

you are too young for menoporsche......... that comes in 10 years, change your thinking.... I call it my "training Porsche" - when I go over the hill, watch out !
