AOS access
Any tricks to gain some access to the AOS short of pulling the engine or transmission?
My new one that I just installed while the engine was out is sucking air. Sure would be nice to have a set up to test run these engines before reinstalling them.

you can lower the motor a couple inches be removing the rear mount (nuts) from the bottom side and lowering the motor till it sits (or nearly sits) on the cross member under the split line of engine trans...
sure its not a hose?

After spending 5 hours today looking for this leak, I honestly don't know what is leaking. Yesterday I got the biggest revs from spraying starting fluid at the AOS so I checked all the hoses and tightend it down. Now I get bigger revs when when I spray behind the alternator.
I had the alternator off 2 days ago and visually checked every thing and it looked ok, but with the alt. off I can't run the engine to check the connections with spray.
I'm a little lost.

BTW.... there is a vacuum canister behind the alternator (under the intakes) for the vario-ram valve and air injection system.... are you loosing vacuum?

I have been starting the engine & letting it idle then spraying starting fluid at areas that might be sucking in air or losing vacuum.
The spray is ether & flamable so if an area is leaking or sucking in air the spray gets sucked into the pistons and revs up- it sounds like you stepped on the gas. Still hard to pin point and there are alot of vacuum lines behind the alternator. Once I pull the alternator I can't start the engine to spray to find the leaks without reassembling the engine. Kind of like shooting in the dark.
I hope someone has a better idea!

What year is your car? The MK2 AOS is easier to access and has fewer connecting points (fits directly into the head w/out any other hoses).
It is unlikely though possible that the new AOS is faulty, I would look at connections therein. If you went in from the intake manifold side, check the vacuum hoses/intake manifold fittings on that side, obviously. I believe you had said that you'd found the intake manifold to be loose or miss-aligned, and that you'd tightened that end a bit more. This to me indicates a possibly mis-aligned manifold and if it were me I'd take off the manifold (or at the least loosen all the bolts) and reseat it. If you were closer I'd come look at it for you, but alas you're not.
Let us know what you find, and good luck.
