Please note if the glue gave out on the weights and the car has been having regular tire changes as normal, then the tire changers aren't removing all the weights between tire changes. The weights don't just fall off until after a few years if that. If your car has been sitting long enough to have the same tires and weights then get all 4 rebalanced. You're best off keeping track at the next tire change if the guys leave the old weights on. It's not the right way to do it.

I was afraid to read this post. I was sure it was going to be the worst catastrophic failure of engine mounts we've heard of....

I had that happen in a 71 vw bus.. the cross brace was not tightened on the back of the motor, I was in south Carolina and all of the sudden the bus went full throttle and felt like it was going to pull a wheelie... the motor half way fell off in the back and the throttle cable pulled tight as it dragged the back half of the motor down the street... I shut it off, sat on the side of the road.. jacked it back up, mounted it and kept going... cracked a ring though from over revving it I suppose... blew smoke on deceleration after that... :-( made it down to FL, and back up to NJ though :-)

hahaha ^^ sorry, but that's funny
I had the battery fall thru the floor of a bug once on the freeway and drag along held on by the cables....might have had a tad bit of a rust issue

Another thing you might check is the wheel temp after drives. If a bearing is bad it normally makes a lot of heat and that heat is transfered into the wheel. Extra heat on the weights glue would cause it to age faster and turn to dust being all dried up. Just put a hand on the hub area of the wheel. Fastest way to check for a bad bearing. It shouldn't be so hot that it burns your hand. If it is then the bearing need looking at.
Oh man lucky it didn't short or throw acid on you. Luck guy on that one. Good thing green peace didn't catch you
Worst I got from my old times bug was the clutch cable sprung one of the windings of the cable while I was pulling out of a tight parking spot. Lucky me I caught it with the brake.

There were stories of Thunderbirds in the 60's that lost their engines on the freeway. (Probably folklore.)
I've never lost an engine, but I can confirm that when the knockoff falls off a rear wire wheel on an MG, the wire wheel can pass you going down the freeway (just as the world slopes into an odd angle and you hear a gawdawful scraping from the rear of your car).
Sorry -- didn't want to create a deviated threadum.

I once had an engine fall out of a car... but it was an engine in the back of a pickup that slid out on a winter day as I was going up a hill. I was very fortunate that the person behind me was able to avoid it!!

people often ask me why I tie everything down in the back of the truck (and I mean everything)... that's why..... in my case I had a clothes dryer fly from the cab to the tailgate and slam into it tipping and ALMOST going out.... who would have thought? well, now I tie everything down!
glad no one was hurt Van

Loaded a up Toyota SR-5 years ago with oak 1x6 lumber. About 300 9 foot rough sawn wood. Pulled out of the lumber yard and lost the wood at the intersection. Slipped right out the tailgate. Had so much weight in the bed that the headlights pointed up. Not fun.....
