Default Another "Whats my 996 worth" Thread. Now for sale

Fellow Rennlist Members,
I apologize for the length of my post, I felt like I needed to describe this car well for you to help me decide what its worth, something I have been having a fairly hard time trying to determine.

Its time for both of my 996s to find new homes.. We need to open up some room in the stable for a newer Porsche with the "new" engine design so we can start learning the internals of those engines and finding their weak points and ways to address them... also I'd like to go ahead and do a big bore on one and ruin its factory warranty :-)

So the first of the 996s to sell will be my '99 C2. This car is hard to put a price tag on because of all the upgrades that it has and some of the special things that it has done to it that aren't common in the 996 market place. The car has been used by me and my wife for both street use and track events. I have used the car for DEs at Road Atlanta (turns low 150s with street tires and my non-driving *** behind the wheel:-) and she has successfully set 4 standing Land Speed Records with the car in 4 different classes in the ECTA in the standing 1 mile at Maxton NC. The fastest of these records was unbroken from 1997 and was in a supercharged class, but she broke it with this car normally aspirated at just a tad over 152 MPH in May of this year... Of course to do this she never saw 6th gear in the standing mile..

The car can be street driven and she I have put 10K miles on it on the street in the past year. With the coil overs and heavy springs and stiff bars it can be a bit harsh on a longer trip. I drive it 83 miles/ day round trip without issue, but I like a radical clutch, gobs of power and the rough ride more than most.

It has full track alignment settings, so with lots of camber all around its fairly hard on tires if using a softer compound. It has Sumos on it now and I like them MUCH better than the Michelin Pilot Sports that were on the car previously, they only lasted for 5K miles and two DE events! The 180 treadwear rating and negative camber coupled to make tire killers!

This car handles and it is fast, its by far the most balanced 996 I have ever driven, the suspension and alignment set up are spot on. Who ever buys this car can take it to the track the same day that they buy it, NOTHING needs to be done!

The car could easily have the suspension swapped back to stock, as I have all the stock parts for another daily driver, but the person who wants this car most will appreciate that it belongs on the track.

Recent Actions:
-Just completed extensive 70K mile Service (the FSI version)
-Installed Sumitomo Tires
-Fresh re-spray of front hood and bumper (rock chips from track usage repaired only)
-Full detail

List of Upgrades:

-Factory Aero kit
-Tinted windows (max legal limit)
-Sport Design Wheels
-Sumitomo HTR Z III Tires (1200 miles and 1 LSR event since installed, no DE time)
-B&M short shifter
-3 Spoke Steering Wheel
-SRP pedal pad set (high grip)
-Hardwired for Valentine 1 detector (V1 not incl)
-Tequipment stainless steel rollbar (strengthened for LSR Rules)
-Tequipment engine protection plate
-Euro GT3 seats x2 (15 months old)
-Tequipment sub-belt bar on driver's seat
-B-K sub-belt bar on passenger seat
-B-K harness clip-on kit
-Sparco harnesses (6-pt driver & 5-pt passenger)
-Amerex 2.5 lb Halotron fire extinguisher
-B-K extinguisher mount
-Safecraft fire extinguisher holder
-GT3 front adjustable lower control arms
-GT3 adjustable sway bars (front & rear)
-GT2 front drop links (to work with GT3 sways)
-JIC Cross Competition coilovers W/10-14KG springs) - one year old, one DE event, two Land Speed events
-Porsche Sport Brake pads front and rear-(One DE event, 8K miles and one LSR event)
-Cryogenically enhanced Zimmerman rotors both front and rear

I have kept a running tally of all the items that have been altered on the engine.. The car has hundreds on dyno runs under its belt and I have all the comparatives of these on file. I have literally collected a library of files through the vehicles miles and updates and have verified the engine's power before and after each event it attended. The first time this car hit my dyno, before the engine was ever touched it made 231RWHP, after a service it was averaging low 240s. I applied many developments to it and altered it to the point where it's peak power output was elevated to 281 RWHP on the same dynojet that it made 50HP less on before the upgrades or our work was done. The average dyno run for this car today is in the low-mid 270 range with it's current flash uploaded which I use for street use and better MPG. This is also the flash that was uploaded when Beth set all 4 of the Land Speed Records with the car, the car performed better with my data acquisition system installed with this flash that when making even more net HP..

We have tuned the car for torque, the torque output is extreme compared to any 3.4 I have seen or experienced in the past, especially over such a broad RPM range which is what has made this car perform so well.

Engine Specific Upgrades:

Internal/ Mechanical enhancements:
LN/ Flat 6 Innovations IMS Bearing Retrofit completed (3K value)
Sachs Race Engineering Clutch Disc
Flat 6 Innovations 4" Under Drive Pulley
LN Engineering Lo Temp thermostat

Exhaust system enhancements:
Maxspeed Headers
Fabspeed mufflers

Oiling system enhancements:
Accu-sump oil accumulator kit from Flat 6 Innovations
Remote mounted Canton oil filter w/ all braided oil hoses and aeroquip fittings
Full Flow oil system
LN Engineering spin on filter adaptor
LN Engineering Accusump adaptor
LN Engineering deep sump kit
LN Engineering Magnetic drain plug

Engine tuning enhancements:
EVOMS cold air intake system
EVOMS software tuning (custom flash designed by myself and Todd Zuccone)

The engine has just had a full service to include a complete evaluation of it's health. Knowing I was going to sell the car I took the liberty of attaining used oil samples of the engine and transaxle lubricants. We also completed leak down, compression and boroscope evaluations of the engine's internals for inspection. I pulled the oil sump plate and inspected the pick up tube for debris or any signs of impending issues, which is what I do at 70K no matter what. I have used the car to gather data, so these final samples were important for me and the new owner..

Issues:
-Constant CEL due to the ECU alterations required to make the power we are generating. (the engine has no codes, the ECU is pissed off with the settings and throws a constant CEL with no negative effects since day one of tuning and exhaust mods) I will fully disclose this when I sell the car and even picture the steady CEL.

I could make changes that would relieve this CEL, but at the loss of a lot of power, especially the engine's torque curve which is higher than any 3.4 I have ever seen. The CEL is a non issue, except aesthetically, the person who would appreciate this car and its mods most wouldn't even care about it.

-Very small crack at the passenger lower corner of the windshield, it does not harm integrity and has been this way the entire time I have owned the car, its barely notable due to its location.

This is a clean car thats been well cared for even though the majority of its life was spent on the track. The Porsche purchaser that would appreciate this car would be a tad different than his/her fellow enthusiasts.. The 3.4 engine thats in the car was not internally modified past the IMS bearing retrofit.

So what do you think a '99 C2 with these serious upgrades done to it is worth?? If you add up the cost of the upgrades the prices are staggering, and these are the mods that everyone wants... Unlike other unknown cars with the factory IMS bearing the new owner wouldn't have to worry about having the retrofit process carried out..

I guess if you were looking for a car this enhanced, what would you want top pay for it? Sorry for the long post, I just kept rambling..

Very nice; whoever buys this is getting a heck of a 996.

Seems to be well matched to somebody interested in the track more so than driving on the road. Looks very nice and is loaded with goodies. GLWS Jake.

Thanks for your observations so far..
These types of coments and numbers were what I hoped to receive..

The car is definitely better suited for the track with the JIC suspension and other mods, but it can be driven to and from the track.. I have proven that you can drive it everyday, but that takes a certain breed..

When I advertise the car I have prepared a super detailed document with videos, tons of pictures and etc. The interior of the car is stunning with the GT3 Euro seats.

If anyone drives it, they'll buy it.. Its faster than any 3.6 powered 996 (non X51) that I've driven hands down and the balance is so damn good!

Jake,

I think $25k may be a little low for this car, though maybe that's all you can get. Without the mods, the car should sell in the high teens imho. Almost all of the mods you've done make it a great start for a Spec996 race car. The flash and cold-air intake would have to come out, and the shocks trade for JRZ's, but you could get some money back on the JIC's or just race them for a while. The accusump, and IMS retrofit are perfect additions, and someone buying a donor car would value that. The GT3 seats could be used for racing, or replaced with a halo seat, but then the buyer could sell the GT3 seats for good money. Also, the aerokit is worth some money as is the clutch. Does it have a LWFW also?

Nice car BTW.

Jake,

Thats more like what I was thinking.. Not horribly more than 25K, but I'd like to get a little bit over that. I know the right person is looking for this exact car, black, sport designs, aero, GT3 seats.. It has all the most desirables. When i advertise it I plan on breaking down the costs of the mods..

Almost all of the mods you've done make it a great start for a Spec996 race car. The flash and cold-air intake would have to come out, and the shocks trade for JRZ's, but you could get some money back on the JIC's or just race them for a while.
I was thinking the same thing.. Those would easily be removed, I could do that before the car even left my stable!

The accusump, and IMS retrofit are perfect additions, and someone buying a donor car would value that.
For longevity on the track these things are simply required and I know that from seeing the results of not using them on a 996 with real suspension and sticky tires that will pull Gs.

The GT3 seats could be used for racing, or replaced with a halo seat, but then the buyer could sell the GT3 seats for good money.
I had thought about pulling them and replacing them with stock seats from my other 996, and I might if I can get the numbers out of the car that I think its worth. I have no idea what they are worth in used condition.

Also, the aerokit is worth some money as is the clutch.
Absolutely, it just makes these cars.. It proved VERY effective in setting the Land Speed Records, one change it allowed gave her 6 MPH!

Does it have a LWFW also?
Nope. I don't like them. Seen too many track cars with broken crankshafts using them. I practice what I preach :-)

Nice car BTW
Thanks! I appreciate your comments!

I am getting ready to look for a car like this (and i am in the industry) and i think 25-27k is right on BUT you are going to have to find the right buyer, so if your not in a hurry you should get the price you want...

If you still have it in a few months i would be interested... I got to sell my 930 first (i am in the same boat that you are in)

Good luck

It'll definitely take the right buyer.. But that buyer will know what all these goodies are worth :-)
It doesn't have to leave tomorrow.. I've got it all cleaned up and parked in the stable with the vintage iron where it can stay dry and clean until it moves down the road. Just gotta get it in the air tomorrow for some under side pictures.

You need to find the right buyer. Today's market is extremely soft. You may be looking for the right buyer for over a year. Today's buyers are getting a lot of car for their money.

Yep, this is a lot of car.. Trust me, I know all about the economy, I run a business in the industry.

BUT the ecomomy hasn't hurt us at all, the people that still want something, want it enough to buy the best one they can find. If we were any busier, I couldn't do the work anyway! The economy has only indirectly impacted us by hurting the parts supply, we can't get what we need fast enough.

With so many options the general references for values don't apply directly to this car, hence the reason for my post here.. Several members have shared my thoughts on price that I just dreamed up based on what I'd like to see for the car..

Don't get me wrong, I started this thread to get a better understanding of what people think the car is worth and that will make a big impact on my asking price. Finding that sweet spot that would sell the car in a few weeks, net a fair price and give the purchaser a good value is what I am ultimately after.

It took me a while to decide to sell it, when Beth broke the last of the records we could get with it before having to seriously update it for safety in the ECTA I realized that it was time to go..
