Default WTF

So my ignition switch broke in my car and I took it to the dealership to be fixed. I dropped it off and everything was fine except I could no longer turn it on. The dealership calls me the next day and said that they swapped the switch but their was a problem. The switch shorted the odometer and now it reads 599999 miles from 41k. They tried to reset it but could not link with the computer. The dealer said its the switches fault and not theirs at all. They want me to buy a new cluster but they do not even know if it will work? Please help!

Wow! WTF is right!!

What happened to your original ignition switch? Did it electrically or mechanically go bad? Did the switch "feel" like normal, but wouldn't start the car? Or did it "feel" weird AND wouldn't start the car? Did the ignition dashboard lights turn on and the starter wouldn't operate? Or, no lights at all in the dash?

I know mechanically these switches can go bad. On my car, you had to "play" with it sometimes, but eventually it would "catch". Electrically it was fine.

I would think that if yours mechanically failed, something must've gotten shorted during the install of the new unit??

first off - shoot, that sucks!

but on the bright side you could have the highest mile 996 in history

Not to make light of it the ignition switch is a known fault item and cause "strange" issues, but I have not heard of this one.. I think this is a Loren Question and you can find him on Renntech (the membership there is priceless!)

post year and model car - BTW there "was" a cluster on CL in Seattle for about $125 recently... do a search, maybe I can help

that's why I'd rather screw it myself, nothing more frustrating than your experience ... I hope it get solved with a new cluster. I just don't understand how it got shorted.

I think at an absolute minimum they should get the cluster for you at cost and do the labor for free.

The switch would not go back to tdc so I could not even get the key in. The dealership said that the wires may have shorted together? The whole conversation kinda went downhill when the tech thought it was funny and laughed, which was followed by my going ballistic on him. I feel like it was partially there fault but then again, I dont know if I could prove it. I feel so shafted.

On another note, I coaxed them into telling me the number of IMS failures that they have seen per 1200 vehicles. Care to guess?

Ivangene: The actual number he gave me was 9 and he said not all of those were catatrophic. I am not sure if he was honest or not about it. He did say that most of the time they see them they have under 30k miles or they had sat for a long time and then were driven long distances.

Tippy: I thought about that, or at least tell excellence that I think I might have been screwed.

I would like to add that the service manager has stayed on top of it trying to help me get the problem fixed. The dealership wants me to pay full price and labor though FML
