Default detailing question: how to tape before using porter cable ?

I am giving a try at the porter cable but I see this thing is gonna kills all the rubber on the car and spread dust all over. I already thing my rubber aroudn windows are looking pretty dull, I don't want them to look even worst.

I was trying to use some blue painter tape to mask, see pic below, but while removing it I see that a good amount of rubber is leaving with the tape.

What are you guys doing about covering area during polishing ? and which tape do you use...if any ... ?

Griot's has a product that gets the wax off of the rubber.

Take a peek.

There's two reasons to tape when you're doing polishing work.

The primary reason is to not burn rubber and plastic trim when using a rotary buffer. Because they produce alot of heat while running they can melt and burn rubber or plastic trim when they come into contact with it. This ISN'T an issue with a porter cable.

The only issue you'll have when using your porter cable is getting wax or polish residue on those rubber parts or out of cracks and crevices. With a little attention to detail and knowing where you can and cannot use your porter cable there's really no need to tape when using one.

The residue you're seeing come up with the tape looks more like dirt than anything else. When was the last time you cleaned your rubber seals?

I use blue painter's tape too. Works great. The residue in your picture is just dirt...not rubber coming off. I'd not worry about it. It's good to have 2 different width tapes too. Helps in tight areas.

Also tape-off your badge and sunroof felt seal, and clear bra edges.

+1 For taping off the clear bra. I boogered one up on my '86 Carrera. Thank God the car was black and was not that noticeable.

+1 that's either dirt or some type of dressing, there are a variety of trim protectants you can use to achieve a glossy look on seals if so desired. I have to say that I used to use painters tape with a random orbital, but haven't in a while.

I agree with others about "it" not being rubber but dirt or residue of some sort. Also, try different brands of "blue tape" as they are not all created equal!

The 3M Blue Painter's Tape at places like Home Depot is very good. I have also seen a green 3M tape at auto parts stores. Don't remember the name of that tape.
