Default What is the dry sump for?

Just trying to learn more about my 911. What exactly does the dry sump do for the flat 6?

It is the holding container for the engine oil rather than having it in the sump below the crank. Many motorcycles and race cars have done this, it makes more sence as it doesn't allow oil to drag the crank and starve in high G corners. The oil pump is 2 pumps in one, a feed and scavenge.

And, fyi, the 996 does not have a dry sump setup. When Porsche went from the 993 to the 996 they went with a different oil system... only the 996TT and GT3/GT2 kept the dry sump system and the older engine block.

You do realize that the 996 is wet sump though right?

When the 996 came out Porsche tried to use some bs description to make it sound like a dry sump, which was not... The engine in the 996 is designed with what Porsche calls "integrated dry sump oiling". This "integrated dry sump" engine does not have an oil scavenge pump in the crankcase to pump the engine oil to a separate holding tank outside the crankcase as a true dry sump design would have. The only scavenge pumps in the 996 engine are in the camshaft boxes and the oil is pumped from there to the bottom of the crankcase as it would be in any "wet sump" engine.

They sure do play a nice game of semantics don't they?

The 996 models that have the M96 water cooled motor (ie, C2, C4, C4S). The dry sump is in the M64 based models (GT2 GT3 Turbo).
