Possible to change a cigarette based plug to a direct wire?
My windshield mounted GPS requires a cig lighter connection but I use that for my XM radio.
I really don't understand current and I'm sure there is a difference between a direct wire job's current (probably about 12V?) and a cig lighter plug which takes much less (probably about 5V?).
The GPS is a TomTom XL 335 S and the kit only came with the cig plug and a USB plug.
TIA!

Dell,
There are a couple of good threads on the 997 Forum about wiring a radad detector from the dome light wiring. I would think you could do the same with your GPS.
Or, if you wanted to mount the TomTom on the left side of the windshield, you could tap into the fuse box and run the wire ud the A pillar to the TomTom.
Or you could also tap into the phone wire inside the upper center console. All you have to do is remove the side panel that is read the gas pedal.

My XM is using it. It's the XM SkyDock so the actual unit plugs in not just a power cord. Anyway, I found a solution a little while ago at Radio Shack. I'm going to install another cig lighter direct wired and hidden.

The cigarette lighter is 12V DC. So, nothing fancy is needed to install it or a 2nd (hidden) one spliced from the first. Your radio shack solution sounds like a very good one.

As Sjfehr said, all cigarette lighters are 12v. Now your gps runs on I believe 5v, which is why there's a transformer in the plug end of the cord to drop the voltage. Same goes for ipods and most cell phones. That's why they can charge straight off the usb port on a computer but need an adapter in the car.
