Ivc2, I would suggest the market price of these cars is already 'discounted' for IMS issues if it wasn't for this question the cars would probably be selling for far more than they are.

During December I have been looking at a number of 996 cars for sale on the west coast. I have seen ads for about 25 or so. At least 20 percent have replaced engines before 65,000 miles. It seems a high number to me. How do I know the new engine with 40,000 or more miles will not have the issue. I plan to buy one with a price discount for ims replacement but sellers don't see it that way. It does give me a concern I do not have with my 964 c2 or clk55 mercedes.

My 2 cents.

We've updated our reliability stats for the 996 to include owner experiences through March 31, 2013.
Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:
2002 911: 61, low, small sample size
2001 911: 21, low, very small sample size
1999 911: 27, low, small sample size
We'll have further updates in August and in November. Given the low sample sizes, these stats are not precise. Additional participants would certainly help.

Same old story, more of the same drama. This pretty much sums up the reliability issues:
Porsche 911 in California, United States
Month Year Odometer
(in miles) Cost Problem/Repair Description
Aug 2012 21545 Engine failed due to IMS bearing giving out. Only fix was to replace entire engine with new crate engine Porsche.

We've actually had hardly any IMS failures reported in the past two years, with hundreds of owners participating. I think this entry was for a repair that occurred before the member joined (but would have to check to be sure).

Michael I think you need to school KrazyK in introductory statistics and what makes a sample valid vs invalid as well as correct methodology as he is hopelessly misguided in clinging to his belief of the validity of the "poll". I know that you are actually qualified to do so... I'm not sure why KrazyK seems to believe it is valid/accurate, I do not believe for a moment that 1 of every 11 996's ever built have actually experienced IMS failure.

I hope you don't believe there is anything more "official" about this poll than there would be about a poll in Crawford, Texas among registered Republicans as to who was the better of the last two presidents...

I want to chime in that my car is a DD and since bought it 3 years ago NOTHING has happened ![Frown](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif)
No IMS, no mechanical issues, just oil and gas.
Actually, my biggest expense category has been UPGRADES

Both stats can be correct. I stated that we've had hardly any failures reported in the last two years. The failure rate you state is for the entire time the cars have been owned. My sense is that, while quite a few failed earlier, hardly any have failed recently. It's possible that those that were likely to fail have, in the great majority of cars, already failed.
