The Engine Code numbers on the label of my maintenance manuel do not relate to the descriptions of engine codes in the "996 Essential Companion" book. They are M9604-661. Should I be suspicious? Maybe somebody here can help.
I have an engine 3.4 m9604 2001 model which is broken. Can i replace it with another engine with code m9601 or m9602 or i have to change the wire from my m9604

Any 3.4l motor from a 996 will work. There were some minor changes to some sensors and vacuum line differences over the years due to options. Also the throttle bodies are a cable version to 99.
That being said as long as u swap the sensors (or verify same) and extenal stuff over it will work with your dme.
The 3.6l or newer u would need an entire care as a donor and get very expensive.

Same vintage 3.2l boxter motors can also be used.
Can i use 3.2 boxter engine to replace mine?. I will have to use the air intake and wire from my 996 and will work or is more complicated

Yes thats why i mentioned it. Blocks r basically the same, but there r some mounting differences on some parts. Sorry i dont know the specifics, but its been done a few times. Google search will be your friend or post a thread with as a new topic title so those that have done it may speak up.

Thanks a lot . I found an engine m9601 to replace my m9604. It will work with my dme or i will have to reprogram from the beginning.

Should. Block and heads r the same. I would swap or buy sensors form your original year and reuse the throttle body. The computer doesnt care about the block or head, just the electronics.
