Did you take the filter housing with you and test/trial fit to find one that fits? I visited an autoparts store that had a bin of various filter wrenches and just tried one until I found one that fit. I forget the size/number of flats.

Try Wal-Mart too.

Also, try your local/nearby VW parts department. IIRC the same filter wrench fit my 02 VW TDi and my 02 Boxster and even my 08 Cayman and 03 Turbo. In fact, the oil filter housing of my Turbo looks strikely similar to the one on my TDi. I no longer have this car so I can't compare filter housing to filter housing but the resemblence is well striking.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Any cloth strap wrench with a metal handle will do. 3"-5" range or whatever will be fine.

+1 for Kragen (O'Reillys). They were the ONLY ones that have those composite ones (like Orient Express put the pictures of) which fit much better than the metal. The composite have nice sharp corners and flats in the interior molded features, while the metal ones are a bit rounded and the flats aren't that flat due to them being pressed into shape rather than molded; I couldn't get the metal one to not slip.

I bought my oil filter cap wrench at Advance Auto Parts. The one I bought is made by AmPro, and it is the metal one that connects to a 3/8 drive socket wrench. Size 74/76 works perfectly. I don't remember the cost, but it wasn't expensive.

I paid $30 for a filter wrench and never use it. I haven't found an OF wrench that doesn't work.

Many thanks to each of you. I have the strap but haven't used it on the 996. I suppose that will be the last resort if I cannot find the wrench.

Thanks again to all.

I bought one of the plastic filter wrenches as I couldn't find the composite ones in Canada. The one I got just broke when I put the filter on last weekend.
I've used the strap wrench on mine several times and it works OK. It just seems you have to lean on it fairly heavily to get the thing to start turning - a bit un-nerving with a plastic canister! To get around all this I just ordered a spin on adapter from L&N.
Good luck.
