Ordered a qt of Porsche coolant. Opened it to find it was pink! I know it's fresh production as they just started delivering in qts again... I have the greenish / yellow now and would just use this to top off the 1/4 cup it needs... Thoughts?

 

Exactly. I believe the pink is the new color.

 

I recently did quite a bit of research on this. From what I understand, Porsche went with a new coolant supplier a few years back. The old factory coolant is green/yellow color and the new stuff is pink. The dealer says that it's okay to mix if they are both factory coolants. However, reading online, many people do not recommend mixing the two different types.

BTW, the factory green coolant is no longer available under the Porsche name. I believe it's still available through the original manufacturer though. If interested, I will have to look up the info later on since I don't have it with me right now.

For such a small volume why not just use DI water?

 

I am about a 1/4 cup low on coolant also. My car has the green and I don't want to mix in pink either. I live in MD and the weather is starting to break but I was nervous about just topping off with DI water for fear that it might get cold again. Any thoughts?

 

The recommended mix is 50% water/50% antifreeze, yielding an effective coolant mixture.

If you're a quarter cup low, adding distilled water (1/4 cup) will not significantly throw off the 50/50 mixture. Rest easy.

 

Original coolant supplier was ELF. I know a guy that has some NOS Porsche green/yellow coolant for sale. They are OE Porsche and are in the original sealed 1 litre bottles. Let me know if you are interested and I will contact him to see if he has anymore.

I topped mine off with the pink when I bought the new overflow tank cap. I'll let you know when catastrophe strikes.

My only concern is the dealer said it's OK to mix.

Hopefully nothing happens. I've read in a number of places......people are claiming that a sludge will begin to form when you mix the two. However, when I asked how many actually witnessed this or had this actually happen to them firsthand, nobody came forward. Urban legend maybe??

Other threads that I have read recommended to completely flush the system and re-fill with the pink stuff. Doing some research........completely flushing the whole system is a real PITA! Bleeding can also be another big issue when refilling from "empty".

Did your dealer tell you that it was okay to mix too?? Or, were you going off of what I had mentioned in my previous post? I am just curious.

WHAT?!?!?!?! I was talking about tomatoes..... what were you thinking about?

 

It was the dealer service department. I told them I just needed a top-off, and they said no problem. I had also heard of the sludge/jello urban legend, but can't find anyone that said it happened to them personally. You know us guys, you would think everyone had a IMS failure within the first year. Not a single victim coming forward on this one, that I can find.

I know I read another poster saying they mixed the two, and no problem 30k miles later. Maybe Macster?

I'm checking the overflow tank after every drive and will stoke the flames of panic if anything happens.
