This car I found on craigslist is near me. Curious what you would offer and the most you would pay for it. It's inexpensive, looks nice, but... had it's engine replaced.... I am not sure how the engine issue effects value. Ok, so here is link to craigslist ad. http://sacramento.craigslist.org/cto/1625334800.html
For those who don't click through ad says: 1999 Porsche Carrera, silver with black leather interior. 6 speed transmission, 19 inch rims, Aero kit. Very well maintained and always garaged. All service paperwork kept. This car drive is very fast and very fun to drive.
Call ____ for more info. Asking $20,500 obo.
I emailed the seller and he told me:
Hey John, the odometer reads 86,000 miles. But porsche recalled the motors from the 99's so the car got a factory replaced motor at 45000 miles. So the motor really only has about 41000 miles. The rest of the car is in great shape, there are no tears in the leather or anything like that. All of the motor service work was done at Ruznuk in LA, i have the documentation for it. This is an awsome car.
There was no "engine recall" Engine probaly failed and was replaced. Thats a value add for sure.
Looks like a nice car, if you are serious get a PPI and than make an offer.
Can't comment on the price in your region, but I'd sure have some questions about that replacement engine if I were you.
If it was a documented Porsche reman or a new motor, it might negatively affect resale in the future because the numbers don't match, but probably not to anybody who knows Porsches and wanted the car to drive. A new motor is better than the original one. If I were shopping, I'd consider this a plus. Bonus points if it went in to the car recently enough that there's some warranty.
If his documents don't support this, though, then it gets a bit sketchy. I think I'd want to see the paperwork from the engine transplant, and get the serial number for the engine so you know exactly what it is (some are 'repaired' and some are 'remanufactured', and you can distinguish between the two by the engine number), and can be sure that it wasn't a salvaged used engine.
I am not aware that there has ever been a recall on entire engines, so that's a flag. Probably just doesn't want to say "the original one failed", but it's not probably how anybody on this board would have put it.
Anyway, long way of saying, check out his docs, but don't be afraid of a replacement engine if it's legit.
If you call Niello Porsche and talk to David Welling (the service manager), he can provide you with information on the car. You will need the VIN number. He is a great guy and been a tremendous help with the two salvaged 99 996's that I have rebuilt. The cost of a PPI at Niello would be a worthwhile investment, if you are serious about purchasing the car.
That is close to what I paid for a 1999 C4 with 83k miles on it... It had a dealer installed, factory remanufactured engine that had only 20K miles on it. Mine was not an aero, but had a few nice upgrades and a very nice aftermarket stereo and speakers.
price looks OK for the car and miles IMO w/ new motor (if true)
it's a partial Aero kit though FYI (missing rear wing and side winglets on rear bumper) make sure the front is not fiberglass and check for accidents because when the front gets smacked the nose is often upgraded
The car looks nice in the pics. Maybe it's not a true Aero? Maybe it's just a "regular" '99 996 with an aftermarket kit that was installed later in life?
I ran across this 1999 Cab for sale at $16K. Looks and sounds like a nice car! Has a replacement engine done as well. I actually contacted the guy since a friend of mine was interested and found out that he has all of the receipts/records too! Sounds like a pretty legit seller and deal. My friend ended up buying a 996 Turbo. Here's the ad for the Cab:
1999 Porsche Carrera Cabriolet - Triple Black, six speed with factory hardtop. Owned by PCA member. Very clean car. Runs perfectly and has been religiously maintained by Bay Area Porsche dealer. Factory six disk changer, car cover and detail kit. Aftermarket performance mufflers, H&R Sport Springs, custom muffler bypass pipes included with purchase, Fabspeed Cold Air Intake, clear marker lights, etc. 117K original miles. 57K miles on factory warranty installed motor. New breaks and clutch installed at 92K. Conti Sport Contact 2's installed 8K ago. Running 285's on the rear. Beautiful wide stance. I am living abroad so the car is garage stored at the moment. Asking $16,000 obo. but accepting reasonable offers. This is a screaming deal for a beautiful car.
Also keep in mind that the 90K service would be due soon, or the 45K service depending upon how you would look at this scenario. That will set you back about 1200 +/- as long as everything checks out. Price is reasonable but not spectacular. I think 19K is more in line. If the car did have the full aero that would be a different story. Have you seen the car in person or are you judging by the pictures and what the seller has told you?
