Default Los angeles area porsche maintenance

does anyone know a good place to get maintenance on my car? Brakes, oil change, etc...

There is beverly hills porsche near me, but they seem expensive, and I am sure they over charge. $290 for an oil change, is that normal?

I have a warranty on my car, so I will probably take it to the dealer if there are any problems, but I would like to find an honest shop for brakes, etc....

Hi,

Tom at www.lucentmotor.com is great! It's a very busy small shop and he also likes to chat-up his clients, so there's usually some waiting involved.

Emdog,

We have a lot of clients that come from LA to see us and work on their Porsches. Give us a shout.

Unscrewing a filter housing under the car and a drain plug, letting the oil run out, then putting the filter back on, installing the plug and filling with oil is not the most pleasent job. It's gotta be worth $220 in labor. Let's see, if I had a garage full of Porsches, I could do about one every 15 minutes, 4 an hour, 32 in an 8 hour shift. Wow that's $7040 per day, and it's easier than what I do and pays way better!

You can do your own oil change in about 30 minutes (probably 45 minutes the first time you do it), 20 of which is waiting for the oil to drain. It will cost you about $70 to $80 depending on the price of the oil. What you need is:

- Low profile oil drain pan - 10 quart capacity
- Oil Filter Wrench - 74 mm with 14 flutes
- 9 quarts of synthetic oil (you will probably use about 8.25 to 8.50 quarts)
- OEM oil filter (includes new "O" ring)
- Replacement crush washer for the oil drain plug
- Get a replacement oil drain plug just in case - they are soft
  • Back the car to the end of the garage so the rear wheels are about 2" from the edge of the gargae and the engine is haning out of the garage.
  • Place oil pan under oil drain plug
  • Losen oil drain plug, the oil will come out FAST
  • Remove filter canister
  • Remove old filter from canister
  • Make a mental note of EXACTLY where the old "O" ring is located on the canister. (It fits in a specific slot on the canister)
  • Remove old "O" ring
  • Install new "O" ring
  • Install new filter
  • Install oil canister on engine
  • Drink you favorite beverage while oil drains (this step is optional)
  • Install new crush ring on oill drain plug
  • Replace oil drail plug (old one if it is still in good shape or use the new one)
  • Add 7.5 quarts of oil, and check dip stick
  • Gradually add additional oil until the oil level is just BELOW the max line on the dip stick. Do not over fill the oil.
  • Start the car and check for leaks.
  • Take old oil to your nearest auto parts store. They will dispost of it for free.

I used TRE in Van Nuys for my 964 and was very pleased but they do fewer of the 996's. Just met Dan Aspesi who owns Speed Gallery in Studio City and had him do my first service as new owner. Gave a great deal of information on all issues, offered alternatives, prices were VERY FAIR and the car was ready within 24 hours. A big part of his business is race prep and he has some great stuff to just see. Just over the canyon from you... Mark

whatever you do, at least source the cabin and engine air filters yourself and install them on your own. That goes for wiper blades too, and the serpentine belt, and the washer fluid, and, well, you get the idea.

agree - if you cannot change a cabin air filter, you should ride the bus

I usually change my own oil on my previous cars, but the problem is that I live in a penthouse in downtown LA now, and park in a lot, therefore, no room to do anything, and it looks pretty odd if Im out there working on my car. Is it easy to change the serpentine belts, and cabin air filters? Is there a thread here that talks about the stuff you can change on your own?
