Default Options to replace failed interior rear view mirror?

My new to me 01 TT has the auto-dimming rear view mirror and the rain sensor which I think is part of the windshield mount. Problem is it has the fogged/blurred problem which I believe may be somewhat common.

I checked with Suncoast Porsche and the replacement mirror is $376! Ouch. Is there any other options that will work? It seems from reading some older post there may be a corresponding Audi mirror. I just want to make sure that the replacement will attach to the existing windshield mount.

Also does anyone know the proper procedure for removing the exisiting mirror? Do the electronics plug in the mirror or up in the overhead console area?

Thanks.

Keith

Sorry I wish I had seen your post earlier as I just deleted an ended Ebay auction for a self-dimming mirror for $110 that did not sell. But it was for an Audi mirror that is supposed to be the same or interchangable for the Porsche one. I know there have been some threads on this mirror here or on some of the other sites, and the Audi version is alot less expensive I think. You might want to do some searches.

The wire for the mirror plugs into the overhead console.

1998+ Audi and Porsche mirrors are inter-changable. I put a auto-dim mirror in my 2002 996 that was from my wife's Audi, and it works like a champ.

Yes, she was, she wanted a mirror with a compass on it, so I got that for her car, and took the non-compass mirror and put it in my 996.

I want to steal the mirror from my wifes Allroad!

But.... that would be a bad move.

The auto-dimming 993 mirrors work as well - I put one in my 996 with great success but do not know if the corresponding wires match up for the rain sensing/reverse gear functions (I replaced a manual mirror).

To remove, wrap a rag around the stalk to the windshield, take a pair of pliers and twist - it will pop off at about 90*.

Please, no more DIY info from someone who owns such a beautiful sailboat!

Not a cheap option, but you could aways go with something like this, the Escort SmartMirror with GPS and Bluetooth:

Thanks, but despite all of my boat maintenance, I still haven't gotten around to making the mirror in the "head," auto-dimming!

Keith- There are two differant self dimming mirrors for that car which I have spent a great deal of time sourcing. The differance is that one is the factory option & the other is the tequipment add on which may also include the tequipment rain sensor. Be carefull. They mount differantly!!! If you have the factory option with rain sensor then the rain sensor is most likely in the center of the mount and can be seen from outside the windshield. In other words it appears to be part of the mount as opposed to being next to the mount. That version slides down from its mount. DO NOT TWIST IT OR YOU WILL BREAK THE WINDSHIELD!! Take the two piece plastic cover off of it & you will see the brass clips on the sides. Gently lift up on the bottom & pull the mirror down. Check your ins. policy before commencing. The other version is the Porsche aftermarket type & replaces the factory non dimming mirror & uses the same twist mount described by others above & in various threads. Sometimes you will have a factory option mirror but with the tequipment rainsensor which is always mounted next to the mirror. I may have an extra mirror for the factory type. PM me if interested.
