Default Buying a car in NC

I will be trying to call the NC DMV tomorrow but I thought I would ask for some insight in advance.

I will be flying from PA to NC to pick up a 2001 996 this coming Friday. I don't see anything on the NC DOT website about temporary tags for out of state buyers. Does NC offer temporary tags for out of state buyers? I have purchased cars out of state before (in NJ) and all I needed was my PA driver's license and proof of insurance. Is there anything special that I need for registration that I should start working with the owner now?

They do offer temp tags, I believe the charge was around $30, and valid for 3 days, I maybe mistaken though, and best to double check. I'm pretty sure you won't need anything else btw.

Good luck.

Have you checked with PA DMV? If you have PA paperwork, it's a PA car and NC DMV is completely non-applicable.

I bought my Boxster S in NC and drove it to VA. I dealt entirely with VA DMV (online, even!), got my trip permit through VA DMV, etc; I didn't have to deal with NC at all. Drove it 3 hours without tags, heh.

I doubt they will be open because of MLK day.

You will do your title transfer in NC and get an intransit tag. This tag will be good for 30 days, the vehicle will need to be PA inspected within that time. When you arrive in PA you will register the car in PA and pay your sales tax.

I will check. That sure would make things a lot easier. Unfortunately, I forgot that today was MLK day. I will have to wait till tomorrow to check.

I checked and NC has a 10 day permit. PA permits can only be used if the car is purchased in PA. I think I am set now.
