To make a long story short. Bought a 1999 C4 in October. Had it PPIed by a dealer who passed it with flying colours. Unfortunately, they made some serious mistakes, but immediately refunded the PPI fee, when I expressed my issues. The big error was that the bearings in the transmission are worn and it is noisy (professionally diagnosed ).
I have looked at variety of options and can get a remanufactured unit from the USA for between $2,500 and $3,300 + shipping (vendors include Vertex, Gbox and Motormeister) or can have it removed and rebuilt for here in Canada with almost new parts (removed from gearboxes that were upgraded to racing specs) for $3,500 to $4,500.
I have access to a lift, a step by step procedure with pictures to remove a C2 gearbox. I would rate my skills as 4 or 5 on a scale of 1 to 10. Is this a DYI for me? If I can save $1K plus the hassle of getting the car to Toronto and back...

There are some tough aspects but if you have the step by step, just take each one as it comes. Having some help is good as I stated its heavy and tough to man handle. But not impossible.
You might need a couple tools you don't have so plan for time there too. Don't rush or set too tight of time frame and you should manage
I thought I read recently that when doing bearings and such it is best to get it all done in there that you want to include the future since the transmission isn't made to be torqued with more than one repair job. It was explained the high pressure required for pressing the bearing back in stress the casing.
Fergus...go for it and if you could...document your steps.
It's 2010 and make it your resolution to conquer it.
I had the same concern about replacing a 951 clutch which as you know is a nightmare. I read post after post saying how difficult it was that only made me want to tackle the job. The biggest advise is preparation,...I read and digested every step and was prepared for the unknown. Patience was also a key factor but most importantly confidence that YOU CAN DO IT...
