Wrong side of the engine to be the RMS, can't say from the pictures what it is though.

If you can't figure it out, get a pro to look at it. By the time oil gets down there, it's not always obvious where it came from. I've had similar leaks on two occasions that turned out to be spark plug tubes and one (I think... memory is foggy) that turned out to be the AOS. In any case, the minor possibilities vastly outnumber the major ones.

Thaks Bruce. Appreciate the recommendation and that's what I will do.

Wow - if your plenum is coated maybe leaky breather line from the crank case? Wonder if the oil separator is bad.

Is that bad? Looks like oil separator is not an expensive part... don't tell me engine has to be dropped to replace it..

Good analysis. That high up about all it can be is oil from breather line and if that overloaded AOS is suspect #1.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Macster,

I read your old post on this topic. Thanks...very informative.

I've also read that on Tip, engine drop is necessary for AOS replacement?

Is the breather line the larger bore hose connecting to the plenum just downstream of the throttle?

That's the thing I hate about the parts diagrams, they rarely show both sides of the line, so you'll have a vacuum line going from one part to nothing but a hose clamp. Great!

AOS can be done from rear of car or tranny side - with a tip, not sure which is easier. I did mine from the rear of the car and I cant see how the tranny would make a differance. It was a PITA to do, but not expensive and rather easy with the exception of the clamp (replace it with a screw type) and lining it up (stupid design, I thought it went into the hole further)

Can't answer question regarding Tip and engine drop for AOS replacement. I simply do not know if engine drop required for any 996 model/transmission combo.

I have no experience with 996 AOS.

My only experience with my 986 is learning how to recognize likely AOS failure signs then upon recognizing AOS failure likely speed dialing tow truck service to arrange to get car to dealer then paying the dealer service department to replace the failing AOS. I've done this two times now, in just over 226K miles of driving.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Hard to tell but the breather line going into the throttle body has a "O-Ring" on it and it is cheap change to test. Here is a link to picture with the line off and you can see the ring if you look close (first picture on right "click to enlarge".
