Default Cruise control -- not like 964???

Previously I had a 1990 964 -- great car -- still think about it.

Now I have a 2002 3.6 996 Targa 6 speed manual.

When using the cruise control I have to reset it if I change gear -- using the clutch "unsets" it.

In the 964 you could set the cruise control in 4th gear and then change up to 5th gear and as soon as you got off the clutch the cruise control was back on.

Can the 996 cruise control be set up to operate like the 964?

Also the 964 cruise control was more acurate in fine tuning the speed -- you seemed to be able to go up 1klm at a time -- the 996 is 2 klm at a time -- and it says so inthe manual (I recall) -- can the fineness/sensativity of the cruise control be set?

Your 964 cruise control may have been broken! The clutch should deactivate it on a 964, too - at least on US models it does this.

Yeah, I would think so....

Ask Toyota about that (you may have heard they're recalling cars and changing electronic processes to address unintented acceleration issues).

OK -- I will jump to the 964 board and ask "what's normal"?

What you are observing in your 996 is correct. Porsche changed the design. Years ago Porsche included a switch on the clutch pedal, which would momentarily deactivate the Tempostat--Geschwindigkeitsregler (cruise control) so that the engine would not race when the clutch was depressed. They eliminated that feature on the 996 and 997 automobiles. (I really miss that on mine). The clutch switch was quite problematic over the years, often requiring adjustment. Although I miss the feature, missing it outright suits me fine because it was so problematic. I don't know exactly when that feature was dropped, but would think it came with the 996 cars in 99. (On my 997 each flick of the lever results in a 1 mph change in speed, or 1.6 kph).

I've never used my cruise control. It's too much fun controlling the car with the throttle, and mixing up the gears. Sitting in 6th with the cruise on would be boring to me.

That said, I would think stepping on the brake or the clutch would de-activate the cruise control. If you're down-shifting, you would need to match revs, not relying on the cruise. Up shifting, you would want to give it more gas. Not the time to have the cruise on, IMHO.

You're in New Jersey. I'm out west. It's a CAREER sometimes getting from point A to point B.
