I can't find anything online about what "MKI" actually means, let alone "MKII" and all the rest, how they fit into body style, options, GT3 this that and the other, bla bla bla.

Can someone briefly explain?

You can do a search here but in summary the difference between the MKI and MKII are as follows:

- MKII has a 3.6 liter, 320 hp engine compared to a 3.4 296-300hp on the MKI
- MKII has turbo-style headlights
- MKII has a glove box
- MKII has slightly different front end and rear aerodynamic treatments
- Different suspensions and wheel/tire combinations (stiffer body as well)

I think the GT3 only came to this country in a MKII format but I might be mistaken. Also the C4S is only available in an MKII style.

There are other differences but as I said before this was just a summary!

Does that mean you could get a 2003 MKI or a 2003 MKII?

And I thought it was confusing that all 911's have a sub-model number (993, 996, 997, etc.).

Just to clarify, MKI means the first generation porsche 996 produced from 1999-2001 [Thus MK I].
MKII designates the evolution of the 996 and refers to 996s produced after 2002 - and later replaced by the 997 (which started appearing in 2005 for certain models). Thus, MK II.

Also, in 2005 both 996s and 997s (in various versions) were produced.

So I've got the last of the MK I's, which mean's it's a collector's item and worth 1000 times as much as a '99 or '00. LOL!! But that doesn't matter, cause I'm not selling, no matter how much any of you beg.

That's much simpler than I thought it was going to be.

An answer to questions you may not have asked.

The GT3 came in both MkI and MkII models, but only the MkII came to North America. The MkI was ROW only.

The MkI was equipped with the taco wing (in reference to it's design) while the MkII GT3 wing is (sometimes) known as the ironing board.

Both the MkI and the MkII GT3 came with the same engine, unlike the "normal" 996.

You are aware already that the GT3 has the old air cooled engine, modified for liquid cooling, while the "normal" 996 used a brand new engine design that we know (and love) as the M96.

The 996 MKIs that had the taco wing and other bits to looks like a ROW GT3 is an "aero kit" 996.

And, MKI is pronounced "mark one"...

Jasper and Van, thanks! That's great info on the GT3's and how they fit into the puzzle. Things make much more sense now.

I knew my car came with a factory "aero kit" (and I mean 'factory' as in the parts all have Porsche PN's), and now know why some folks have called it a "MKI areo kit" and sometimes called my car an "areo MKI car". Thx guys!

And, interestingly, the two generations of 997 are known as 997.1 and 997.2, as opposed to MKI and MKII cars.

Plenty call the MkI and Mk II the 996.1 and 996.2. That got started after the 997.2 came out. Plus its less letters to type .

The 996.1 GT3 and 996.2 GT3 have similiar motors, both 3.6, but there are internal differences. the 996.1 GT3 is 360hp and the 996.2 GT3 is 380hp

I would take the 6gt3.1 over 6gt3.2 but would take the 7gt3.2 over the 7gt3.1.... 3.8 rules!...def luv the race proven gt1 blocks over the m96/m97 blocks but in any case Id take the 997.2 block over the 997.1, 996.2 and 996.1.... Porsche fans are such geeks!
