Yea they don't like being raced hard without a cooler. I've only run the car 4 weekends, but from the start it would grind shifting into 3rd. after it got hot. It became very difficult to shift into 1st and 3rd, and then starting throwing oil during Saturday's race. I pitted and found a crack on the driver's side. Sealed it up with JB Weld Sat night and filled it Sunday morning. Made it 5 laps before it just stuck in neutral and wouldn't shift at all. Car has 44k original miles on it. Since it's a race car, I'll be adding a cooler and going to steel synchros....

I am in the same boat. But all I need are all new bearings and to remachine one of my bearing races. Your cracked case can be rewelded. I can point you to a place out in Calif that will take care of it. Nothing vested. PM me here or on the boxster site.

Thanks Paul. I ordered a stock rebuild this morning from G-Box in Boulder, Colo. They build lots of Grand Am boxes and have been around awhile. I realize the case can be welded, but the cost for his rebuilt tranny is reasonable at $3,200. He'll install and shim my Guard LSD for a few hundred more. I may have him weld the blown box an build a back up tranny depending on what's left though I can't imagine much of it's salvageable.
Side bar: I'd love to use a close ratio 3-6th and a 4.00:1 R & P for PCA and GTS races, but unfortunately I have to use all stock gearing for the 996 Spec series I mostly run. I'm sure custom gearing would save me 2 seconds a lap or more at most tracks as the stock gearing is way to tall for racing.....

I can help you with this. I think that Stan talked to you about this, but I would be happy to discuss things with you in more detail. I am sure that we can work something out that will work quite well for you.
Give me a call when you have time, sorry to hear about the bad luck, but again I am sure that we can get you back up and running again soon.
Warmest Regards,

Well, my main pinion bearing is dying at 68,000 miles, but apparently I'm the first person that my Porsche indy mechanic has seen with that issue. He has seen a fair bit of 2nd gear synchros die though.

Don't keep driving it or you will end up messing up the carrier where the bearing rides making your case opening elliptical.
All the parts are readily available these days.
Just because your personal mechanic has never seen it before doesn't mean very much. It is pretty well known that the 996 transmission has sealed bearings the self destruct eventually. Just speak with Gbox, Jake Raby, etc.

Erik,
Thanks, ended up finding a very affordable rebuildable case attached to a spare motor
