Thumbs up Got the new AVIC installed

Now all I have to do is figure out how to work it.

It was a real trial and error installation. The 996 installation kit assumes an early 996/boxster and is missing lots of stuff. Nothing a bit of plastic fabrication, super glue, four missing wires added, lots of unneeded wires removed, etc. couldn't solve.

Sound great though. Somehow, even though it's sending just four speaker-level channels to the Bose amp, it completely wakes it up.

Marc, you were right about it working well with the Bose amp and speakers. I remain confused, though, how.

Is the Bose amp so clever that it's taking the different equalization and effects from the AVIC and processing them to fit it's idea of the 996 "soundstage"? I'm not sure how to understand how the AVIC can seem to have so much control, when it really only has the RF, LF, RR, LR speaker outputs to work with.

If so, that would mean that the signal paths within the radio itself were the previous limiting factor. Perhaps the factory radios had less shielding, or maybe there are better capacitors in the new radios and that smooths power fluctuations.

Looks like a great install... I am keen to do this to the Boxster as I have PCM 1 and it is essentially useless.

I thought late 02 got MOST. Anyway, you're all lucky. I'm going to try to do the same thing, but I have to go around the MOST amp. Guess I need to look at the outputs first to see how difficult that might be.

Funny that the Z3 was so cool just 2 years ago.

I tried Pandora for the first time a couple of months ago. IMO, the perfect thing for driving: when you'd rather not pay too much attention, but just listen to well chosen music.

Of course, if it involves the music industry—and increasing convenience or enjoyment—it must never be allowed to happen!

Jon,

What do you think you spent on installation parts? ie cage, harness, face plate.

I'm trying to decide if it's worth $300 to go with the CF kit on Fleabay.

Where did you get the startup graphic?
Did you do the parking brake bypass? I couldn't figure it out with the renntech diy.
