Default Belt Dressing

Hi all,

I still have not been able to resolve my problem. My belt squeals whenever it gets wet. Its a new belt and the alternator is new also....I have been reading about belt dressing... Can I use this stuff? Will it harm the car???

Thanks,

Should not need belt dressing. Why is belt getting wet? How is belt getting wet?

Suspect belt tensioner may not be applying proper tension to belt. IIRC there is a belt tensioner test but do not remember the details.

Is belt proper size and length and type? Is it routed correctly? Does belt show any signs of distress?

No way a serpentine belt should need any dressing if belt and accessory drives, idlers, tensioner working properly.

Besides dressing is treating the symptom not the disease.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Belt dressing turns into goo once applied. I think it literally turns the rubber into snot, thats why the belt stops squealing.

Yes, I used it on a supercharger belt because it was slipping and losing boost.

It ruined the belt.

I dont think it will harm anything but I bet it will sling goey stuff all over the engine compartment.

That would be a nasty mess to clean up.

Best bet is to remove the belt and see if any pulleys are taking any excessive force to turn.

think of this - when the car was new, nothing sqeeled or needed belt dressing, therefore some part is causing the issue... issolate the part and fix it, then you will have the problem solved -

Mine squeaked a bit on my truck and I can see where it squaks against one of the pulleys. I took a new file to the moving belt (don't let go of it!!) and filed it down a bit on each side. No more squeaks, took 30 seconds.

Buy a Gatorback belt. They work really well.
