Default one more radiator fan question this week - NSFW - pics

I was going to piggy back this question, but I need to know quickly as my car goes in tomorrow for the estimate on the little fender bender I was in....

when the fans are on medium speed - do both side run?

I was un-able to have them kick into high while just sitting, idle in the driveway (what does that tell you about Seattle summer temps) but on Medium speed I have only one fan running - side opposite my "bump"

Thanks for quick replies.....

I get a Ford Fu***** to drive to work tomorrow!

Default AFAIK both sides run and run at same speed if everything's working...

ok. I hit some road debris with my Boxster and busted driver's side radiator. Radiator replaced. Fan suspect. (Imprint of fan where it spun against radiator so you know fan took a bit of a beating.)

Tech wanted to replace fan. I reminded him with PST2 (now PWIS) he can command one or both fans come on. He did and found both fans ok. Left original fan in car and that was about a zillion miles back and fan still ok.

Sincerely,

Macster.

There were a couple of well documented fan mods on the board from way back, i believe 1999porsche911 was the first guy to really get it down.

Ed. Please remove the picture of my wife. I prefer that her image not be on the internet.

Fans are wired to run at the same time regardless of speed. If the fuse is not blown, likely the resistor is bad, this is assuming the high speed operation is fine (turn on the A/C). You MAY be able to get your hands on a resistor separately -I wasn't able to a few months ago- otherwise you can swap the whole fan over. I do have one for sale if you decide to go that route.

UFFF - $100 for the resistor...(996.616.101.00 right) how do you check if thats what's bad?

the car is not here so I cant check the fuses... but shouldn't there be one fuse for both fans?

AND - this is the side that was hit... any chance these are related? (not to snivel, but I know it doesnt work now, and I am not at all certain it worked before)

I believe there's 4 relays total. From my experience it's usually the resistor though, especially if the fans come on at high speed (which bypasses the resistor). I think I'm only asking $100 for the fan w/the resistor. If you get just the resistor, you'll need to wire it in btw.

Anyway, you can unplug the fan and try energizing it from it's plug. If it comes on at high speed, but not at low speed, you need the resistor. If it doesn't come on at all, you need the motor.
