Experience w/ core charge and Porsche?
I will be having the engine in my 99 996 replaced within the next few weeks and I was curious on what I can expect for my core.
Its got 75,000. Damged due to hydrolock. When the engine runs there is a distinctive knocking sound, dies at idle. It is the opinion of my mechanic that its a bent rod.
Otherwise, the engine runs fine, no other issues. I cannot however speak to the condition of the crankshaft or C-shaft carrier.
Anybody have an idea what portion of the $2313 I can likely expect? You pay the core charge regardless and await Porsche's decision correct?

I have never heard of anyone not getting the core charge back if the engine was returned whole and assembled. If Porsche does not give back the full amount then they would have to tell you what was wrong with the engine, and the don't seem to want to ever divulge that info.

Sounds good. The engine is being picked up from the shop today. The dealer that is exchanging the engine simply looks it over for completeness and then waives any core charge.
The 3.4 engine is (roughly) 16,800 with a 2,313 core charge. Therefore, I paid: 14,500.

Jake has a great reputation both for integrity and quality of service. His rebuilds cost between 15-20K. If you call him he'll be more than happy to talk about his engine program. I would have had my engine rebuilt by Jake but his lead time was unrealistic for my situation.

Yeah it is pretty expensive. I'm not sure what sunset/suncoast charges but I believe its the same as my local dealer.
Interestingly, my shop uses a reputable used engine supplier and they wanted $13-14K for a 3.4 w/ 65K miles and a 1yr warranty. That isnt really competitive at all..

The 99' C4 I just picked up had a reman installed 1K miles ago (last year) and it was 'only' $8600 bucks according to the receipt + $2500 to R&R, etc. for a grand total of $11,129.44. That included all the ancillaries such as coolant, p/s fluid, shop costs, misc. clamps & gaskets, etc. The cost ALSO included a brand new coolant reservoir, Virginai State inspection, etc., etc. According to the installing shop owner, it was purchased from a big Porsche dealer here in the area and has a two year warranty FWIW.
