Default Quick questions

I noticed two things today, and I could use some info on them

Firstly, while driving home in terrible traffic, I get a message saying 'engine fan failure' and the red section of the engine temp gauge flashes. The temp stayed right where it should and never moved. I shut off the car, restarted it and it was gone. Any idea what I should check?

Second, if the options codes arent under the front hood, where are they? Mine doesnt have a sticker.

On the fan warning, best thing is to read the failure codes. My guess is a potential short or something, maybe on the high speed fan? But that's pure speculation.

On the option codes, you'll have to have a dealer look the options up based on the VIN, I think.

You have one of the rare "no options" car - I also have one. Welcome to the party PAL!

Hahahaha

Doug - how would I read the code if it cleared? It came on after about 45 mins of bumper to bumper traffic, but the temp guage didnt move. Got home, turned car off, back on, gone.

ivangene - haha lucky me.

Does anyone ever notice an alignment problem with the hinges of the front hood? When i open and close it, the passenger hinge always stays raised about 1cm. It just feels still, like maybe its dirty, but i can push it down gently and it goes into place

The fault codes should be stored - even if the light clears, you should be able to find out what happened.
EDIT: and by the way, you'll need a OBD code reader, think you may be able to go to Autozone, a local p-car shop, or a dealer.

Regarding the hinge. I know you just bought this lovely car, but it could be that the hood was replaced? I don't want to ruin your day or anything - trust me, a little sheet metal is just a little sheet metal... if it was an '08, it might trouble me. I found out after I bought mine that it didn't have a mark on the Carfax, but it had a prior front end collision in Autocheck (Equifax's database). For me, it appears to have been just the front bumper cover. But alas - these cars aren't pristine anymore, unless you look at one (like Phil's) with very, very, low miles!

IIRC the options sticker is in 2 places I believe. Under the front hood and in the service booklet. But I'm guessing you don't have the original manuals that came with the car. No worries, any Porsche dealer can just look it up using your car's VIN. While they are at it, ask them to tell you the warranty history of the car and anything else they can dig up in the system.

Try reading the code with an OBD II scan tool. You can borrow one to read the code at any Autozone for free. Or you can pay the dealer $120 for the same thing.

BTW, seeing as the sticker is missing, make sure the car came with the rest of the bit and pieces i.e. tool kit, spare tire, jack, hard top removal tool, head light removal tool.

Was your car in an accident? Maybe they replaced the front hood and forgot to replace the sticker? That might also explain the hinge being a little off.

The CEL didnt light up tho, just where it shows the temp it changed to that warning. I went back in (clicking the computer thing on the left) and it stored until I restarted, then it wasnt there when I went back in. Would it still be stored if I read it with an OBD2 reader?

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. I had a PPI and there was no mention of it, which is annoying. Still looks perfect tho

I do have the original books. Ill look in there for the options

I actually want to buy an OBD2 reader. Can anyone recommend the best cheap one and where to get it?

I have all the rest I think. I know the tires in there, are the other tools right in that compartment too? Carfax was clean, but it could have been in something minor. Either way, is there any way to get that hinge lining up better?

Sure, I can recall all of the option codes, right off the top of my head... Not.

Go to Renntech, or they're listed pretty well in Adrian Streather's "bible." I can look them up tomorrow if you need them.

762 is the code for sticky hood hinge as opposed to 763 hard to close hood latch (which is what I have)
