P0446 Confusion, purge valve?
My 99 996 has CEL'd me 4-5 times in the past 6 months with P0446. I was told this was ubiquitously a gas cap code. The seal on my gas cap has many little, finder-nail-wide, cranks in it, but nothing major. Could this be the problem? However, after snooping around I read about the purge valve throwing a P0446 and I too hear a "tapping sound" from somewhere in the car intermittently. Any suggestions?

Look at SkooT1027's "Operating Temp" thread on this page.
If the number on the top of your cap ends in 0 you might want to upgrade to a later one.
The purge valve is the black thing mounted behind your filler cap. On my car it is "up" when the car is hot. There is a steel bale on it. If you stand the bale up it props the valve open to help purge the cooling system. I think if it is tapping that could indicate varying coolant pressure. Your cap may be leaking at pressure causing the valve to "bounce"

OOPS! NEVER MIND...
The gas doesn't go in the back?
Sorry Navy- My bad I just had to replace a leaky coolant tank cap, seal went bad. I was so excited that I might be able to contribute some help that it interfered with my reading comprehension.

Hey, I am just kidding!!!
I understand where you are coming from. I remember the first time I knew the answer to someone's question, I was so pumped that I could hardly make my fingers type correctly.

99firehawk, its 1999, 73*** miles,I've put 15***-16 on in the last year. I'm a pretty conservative driver, maybe one 5,000-6,500 rpm drive a week. Need any other details?

That should be enough, the 15k in the last year is what im looking for.
How ever with 70k on a 10 year old car it could still be an issue.
That fault is casued when the shutoffvalve is not detected as opening, see this alot on old cars with low milage. The fresh air inlet pipe becomes clogged with dirt/dust/spider webs.
Are you a diy kinda guy?

If you want to check the purge line, remove the front right-hand wheel housing liner and remove the air line from canister. Use compressed air and blow through the line to clear any blockage.
