Default 996 battery recommendations?

I may have a dead and non-rechargable battery in my '02 C2. Does anyone have a battery recommendation other than OEM? The battery at the Dealer costs $270 Cdn. Note that this car lives in a cold climate and is used daily.

Many posts on this. Check out Renntech. I bought my battery from CostCo for about $50. Very easy to find a non-OEM battery that works even better than the OEM.

Is it okay to replace with one that doesn't have a vent/drain tube?

Yes, a sealed battery will work. However, it is easy to find a vented one.

Duralast 48-DL (vented) at Autozone about $80. Autozone's records say the Duralast 49-DL is the correct battery but it is too long to fit in the battery tray. Don't ask me how I know.

Most of these batteries are vented and come with a vent kit (just a long tube and coupler) to route the tube to the 996 one.

Yea, the thread explains how to make one. Basically drill two holes and bend the fastener.

i've not been impressed with Optimas, especially for the cost. Makes sense in an off road or marine app, but not really in a sports car. I put in a Bosch (best warranty) but it was more $$ than the Duralast 48, which I've used in a number of cars. I didn't go with it this time because, while I've used them, I've also had to return 2 of them within 2 years of purchase. I got a new one each time, no questions asked and no hassle, and they lasted till I sold the cars (over 5 years), but it was still a PITA to go out to a dead battery that just died with no warning (both times in the heat of summer)

I've had great success with Optima batteries...plus there's no venting so you don't have to worry about potential corrosion.

This topic has been beaten to death but here is some of the best info you will find from another thread......Ok, it was my post so I might be a little biased but it doesn't make it any less true.

We were posting about Interstate batteries and someone recommended another model number that comes up for this car on the Interstate website (this model is the MTP-91 but it is NOT the direct replacement). Here was my response;

This is the same thing I discovered via the website. Totally prepared I walked in and said "I need the MTP-91". The guy looks at my $225 22 month old POS Porsche boat anchor and says "why do you want a physically different battery, the H7 is the IDENTICAL case, handles, and location of the vent tube connection whereas the -91 is not". I had him bring both to the front and sure enough, two different animals.

Don't pay any attention to the website. Go to your local Interstate location and put your dead one next to them and you will see. H7 is the one. I believe it has an 85 month warranty.

Most importantly...DO NOT BUY ANOTHER OEM BATTERY. Unless you want to join the scores of us who made that mistake. My original one died early and the replacement made it about 22 months and the dealers will not stand behind them. My local one even confessed that the OEM is crap. Should have just burned the $225 in the fireplace so I could have gotten some enjoyment out of it.
