Default Home made PSE on/off valve?

I am planning to do the PSE mod to my mufflers -- 2002 3.6 -- getting the stainless tube and doing the bends -- so the car does not have to be off the road for to long.

I was wondering -- has anybody come across stainless steel valves that could be welded in and then hand operated so that if there ever was a need to have a quiet exhaust again they could be closed off?

I do understand that I could buy some stainless steel ball valves -- as used in industry -- but am looking for something a little lighter weight -- similar to what the original Porsche fitment is but as said they would be operated by hand on a very occasional basis only.

Any leads or guidance as to where I could get such valves would be much appreciated.

I do not know the answer to your question however I did the PSE mod and I really do not think that there is a need for the on/off switch. After the mod, the car is not too loud. I personally think that the car sounds the way that it should have sounded from the factory. The car sounds great, not obnoxious. I personally think that it is a waste of time and energy to put the switch on.

I agree, the modded mufflers are not crazy loud. They are louder than stock but also deeper sounding. At cruising speed, they don't need to be silenced. An on/off valve would not be worth the trouble, IMO.

I recently had the chance to hear the PSE mod live... wow - what a sound. Really mean. I totally agree it should have been OEM.

Thanks for the advice -- it is difficult in this part of the world -- not too many Porsches around here -- so I cannot hear what the sports exhaust sounds like.

I will go ahead with the mod without my fancy valve idea -- just being a bit cautious I suppose.

Thanks again

I don’t know how to install an on/off valve. However, I think it is functional and not just for controlling sound. I have a set of stock cans and fister modll for my 04 996 and I ended up going back to the stock cans even though I loved the sound. The reason was that the stock cans smoothed out the power surge when the vario cam lift kicks in @ 3,200 rpm and also I noticed a little more low end power. I can see why Porsche uses the on/off valve, I read somewhere that it is closed under 25 mph.

I had the PSE on my 997 and liked it so much that I had modified to be on all the time. You will like the sound track so much that you will end up doing the same thing; hence, don't invest the time in devising a method for the on/off switch.

Many of us who have PSE did the mod so that it would stay on all the time. It's not so loud as to wake the neighbors after all!

I was going to give you a hard time about the fancy valve thing, but I guess it's not necessary now....

I believe that the valve is only there for noise pollution reasons for certain countries in Europe. The PSE doesn't add any power, so I can't see why a valve would have any effect.

No, what you want to do is get a stainless steel 3-way valve. Put a full size pipe in between the inlet and outlet of the muffler, bypassing it completely. This would be a pain in the *** to do, and a 3" 3-way valve would be surprisingly expensive, but man would it be cool to be able to switch back and forth from normal sound to muffler bypass at the twist of handle.

Here's a stupid question: does the PSE bypass the muffler entirely?
