Default Asking price vs. selling price

Peroidiocally I go on auto trader just to compare similar cars to mine (2003
C4S coupe, 23,000 Mi, 6, speed well optioned) And see what people are asking. Most are asking (key word) in the $45-50K range. The cheapest was an 02 w/ 60K on the clock for 29K and the most expensive was an 05 20K for $60,000.

If people are getting ANYWHERE NEAR THIS the market dosn't seem too bad. I read storys all the time on here where it seems people are saying they cant sell their low mileage 04's for much over 25K

It seems if anyone puts up a "what is my car worth" post everyone low ***** it. Sometimes I think we are devalueing (is that a word?) our own cars.

Just musing....

I couldn't agree more. That said, it's still a hard time to sell toys.

I agree that forums in general often push car prices down. At least within the forum. It's b/c people decide what they want to pay, and therefore when people ask what something is worth, that's the number they get. I have found location across the country effects price a LOT ($5k+ swings). I do hate to tell you, I don't see an 03 c4s getting near $50k, but I'm not positive. I know that 04 c4s cabs can be had bw $40-45k. I think also most asking prices are higher than they get and expect to get. The car I'm finalizing now I pushed down over 15% from asking price and it was already priced reasonably.

For what it's worth, I got an '02 C4S with 46M miles, heavily optioned (incl nav/PCM, wood, advanced technic, sunroof, supple leather, etc.) + PSS9, GT3 links and sway bars, short shifter, etc., + clean PPI for $32.5M a couple of months ago (asking price was $37M).

I bid $32M, which was what I thought would be a safe price even 2 - 3 months later in this market, and settled at $32.5M. [for you non-financial types, M is thousands and MM is millions (same as Roman numerals)!]

See "Price help on 2002 C4S Coupe" on this board or search my user name for pix and more details if interested.

Look in the back of Autoweek or Pano. There is no recession by those prices.

Jr2,

Actually to us non-financial types "K" or "Big Ones" is thousands and "M" is millions.

Last year I probably paid about $1,500-2K over a similar car without a CPO. You should've seen the crazy spreadsheet I had comparing cars and all their specifics - what do you expect from a math teacher!

Haha that's the exact approach I took when buying a bike last summer. I had all kinds of pricing info and mapped each one I was interested in against it. Helped me get a great deal.

A lot of people are listing at a relatively high price and then deciding against selling.

MM = 1,000 x 1,000 + 1MM (should have been clearer, perhaps)

It's not an issue of clarity. In Roman numerals, MM = 1000 + 1000 = 2000, not 1000 * 1000. That's why XX = 20, for example. M with a line over it is 1 million in Roman numerals.
