I would never say its "not a Porsche"
In fact I even like the 928's, 944's, and would consider a 914 ! ALL are Porsche's...all are unique niche and I bet a blast to drive... but if I have to choose (1)... 911 is the answer
Cayman's are really nice, I saw a brown one the other day and stopped to look at it... plus a BEAUTIFUL woman came out of the store and we had a short conversation about our cars....(bonus!) - I see RUF is doing a 911 motor in a Boxster, COOL!... but, its just not the 911, and since I wanted one for SOOOO LONG, I would have kicked myself everyday had I NOT bought the 911 - to each his own. This is just my opinion on it

Ed,

+1 and still one of my favorite quotes... But the version I saw went like this "A boxster sitting in the driveway is a daily reminder you couldn't quite afford a Carrera..." Either way...

The last time I posted that quote I got grief - it went something like this "Gee... did I accidentally end up in the XXX thread???" (where xxx is apparently a rigorously defended forum...)

Glad someone else said it this time...

+1 there too... My wife couldn't understand why I wouldn't want to save a little money by getting into a newer boxster... I think the words she used were "A Porsche is a Porsche..." Umm... NO!

though the cayman is a balanced car.... it will spin like a top on the verge of loosing grip (very little warning).... while a 911 will give you plenty of warning before letting go.... not that I tried it myself. This makes the 911 a lot more fun to drive.

Cayman on the track are very fast... but its the 40th for me.

I was starting to consider a cayman s when I realized they weren't much more than some 996's were going for. I haven't driven one yet, but I think they look great and newer is always nice. The two things that turned me off was lack of a back seat ( i know there isn't much in a 996, but there still are two which for a DD helps at times ) and that I decided I want a vert. If I didn't want a vert, I think I might try to make due without back seats and see how it was. Like mentioned, they are different cars. Go with the one that you enjoy more, not the one that you think other people will like more

i am one of them, that's only b/c my garage only holds three cars and my wife nags too much. when i get rid of the wife and take all her asset, you shall see more cayman in my garage.

those who find cayman is not a real porsche, clearly have no clue what porsche is all about. and those who finds 993 more fun to drive.... ah... drive it again. they are different cars, one is no more fun than the other.

there are roads and times that i much rather drive my 2.5L boxster than my 996gt3, 7gt3 or RS.

a 3.4L cayman will eat 996 for lunch any day. sometimes they even devour GT3's.

i just find it irritating when ppl comment on cars they have not had enough mileage on. put 50k miles on a 996 and 50k miles on a cayman s, then you can start comment on them.

ok rant over, back to your normal program.

Actually quoted by Jeremy C. from Topgear and it is "Everytime you look out your window and see the Boxster in the driveway, it will remind you that you couldn't afford a 911"
Love that qquote, it is a classic!!

i test drove a 2008 cayman s a month or so ago. it's very nice in the handling department. i can't attest to the power because i haven't driven a 40th so i only had my 01 C4 to compare it to. it seemed faster to my butt dyno. i think the mid-engine layout makes the car operate very differently. test drive and you'll see.

the one thing i did note was that the 2 trunks does make it a nice weekend trip car, but only if you can live without rear seats. when i use my car for a weekend getaway with my wife, we end up having to use the rear seats for luggage space.

not true. box and cay give you as much warning as 911's.
